Level on Points, Everything to Play For
It doesn’t get much tighter than this. Villarreal and Atletico Madrid head into Sunday night’s clash at the Estadio de la Cerámica level on 69 points and identical goal differences. This is a straight shootout for third place, with Champions League qualification spots potentially on the line depending on how the rest of the final day plays out. Marcelino against Simeone. Old rivals. Real stakes.
Villarreal’s recent form is a concern, though. Back-to-back defeats heading into this one, including a 2-3 loss at home to Sevilla and a 0-2 defeat away at Rayo Vallecano, has taken the gloss off what had been a solid campaign. Before that wobble, they were banging goals in, putting five past Levante and winning at home against Celta Vigo. The attacking talent is real. G. Mikautadze leads the line with 12 goals in 31 appearances this season, Gerard Moreno has chipped in 10 goals from 22 games, and Alberto Moleiro adds another 10 goals and 5 assists from midfield. When it clicks, this side can hurt anyone.
The problem is that their home record, while decent on paper (W14 D1 L3), masks how vulnerable they’ve looked lately. Eight goals conceded across their last five matches tells its own story.
Atletico’s Form Holds Up Better
Simeone’s side have done the dirty work when it mattered. Wins away at Osasuna and Valencia in recent weeks show they can grind results on the road, and the 1-0 home win against Girona keeps the pressure on. They did lose at home to Celta Vigo and were beaten 0-1 away at Arsenal in the Champions League, but the La Liga form has been consistent enough.
A. Sørloth leads Atletico’s attack with 13 goals in 34 appearances, and Julian Álvarez adds 8 goals and 4 assists from 29 games. Griezmann, now in his 30s, still contributes: 7 goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances. This is a squad with goals throughout it, and Simeone will fancy his chances of getting at a Villarreal backline that has been shipping goals recently.
J. Giménez is absent for Atletico, which is a real blow to their defensive structure. Álex Baena and T. Almada also miss out. For Villarreal, goalkeeper Diego Conde is unavailable alongside Ayoze Perez and Willy Kambwala. The Giménez absence matters most here given the quality of Villarreal’s forward line when they’re at their best.
Head-to-Head and the Betting Angle
Atletico have the edge in recent meetings. They won 2-0 at home earlier this season in the reverse fixture, and the H2H over the last five leans their way with three wins to Villarreal’s none, plus two draws. The last time Villarreal won one of these was further back than any of those five results. That said, the Cerámica can be a different proposition, and Villarreal do have the firepower to cause problems.
The narrative around this game screams goals. Both attacks are loaded, both defences have looked shaky at times across recent weeks, and there’s nothing to protect here at the end of the season. Villarreal need a win to feel secure. Atletico need the same. Neither side is going to sit deep and play for a 0-0.
Over 2.5 Goals at 1.44 is short, granted, but there’s a case for it given how open both teams have been. Four of the last five H2H meetings have produced at least two goals, and three of Villarreal’s last five produced three or more. The match result market is almost coin-flip odds across the board, with Villarreal at 2.52, the draw at 4, and Atletico at 2.70. Given Atletico’s superior H2H record, their ability to win away from home, and the fact that Villarreal have just lost two on the spin, I’ll take Simeone’s side to edge this.
Odds: 2.7 — BoyleSports
Atletico have won three of the last five meetings with Villarreal, including the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this season. Villarreal have lost their last two and are shipping goals at a worrying rate, while the absence of Giménez matters less here given how porous the home backline has been. Simeone’s side can nick this and leapfrog their rivals on the final day.
