Derby vs Oxford: Championship Preview, 18 April 2026
Derby County are in the thick of a play-off battle, sitting 8th with 63 points. Oxford United are 22nd and fighting to avoid dropping back into League One. The gap between these two sides could hardly be wider right now, which makes this a fascinating fixture at Pride Park to kick off the Saturday card.
Form and League Context
John Eustace's Derby have been inconsistent over their last five, but the broader picture looks decent. Three wins in five, including away victories at Portsmouth and a 2-0 home hammering of Stoke, gives them enough to work with. The defeat at Southampton hurts, but on their own patch they've been solid this season: nine home wins from 21 attempts with only six losses. A 12:30 kick-off at Pride Park, where the atmosphere tends to be quieter early doors, could suit a Derby side that doesn't need to be at full tilt to control a struggling Oxford.
C. Morris leads the Derby attack with 12 goals in 27 appearances, and P. Agyemang has chipped in with 10 in 37. There's genuine threat in this team, and Oxford are not well set up to deal with it. Matt Bloomfield's side have won just four games on the road all season and are conceding consistently. That -13 goal difference tells you everything about their defensive fragility.
Oxford's last five reads: win, draw, draw, loss, draw. They've not lost recently but they've barely won either. The 2-0 home win over Watford looks decent on paper, but look closer and it's surrounded by three draws and a 2-0 defeat at Southampton. W. Lankshear leads their scoring with 9 goals in 40 appearances, C. Brannagan has 6 from midfield, but this is not a side that creates enough away from home to threaten a team of Derby's quality.
Injuries and Team News
Derby are missing Matthew Clarke, Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, and Callum Elder through unknown issues. M. Clarke is a notable absence given his 41 appearances this season, though with 3 goals and 3 assists, his loss is more about accumulated contributions than outright match-winning quality. Eustace still has enough attacking options to get the job done.
Oxford are without Ole ter Haar Romeny, Ciaron Brown, and Nik Prelec. Brown is a defensive presence and his absence is not ideal for a side already conceding too freely on the road. For a team scrapping to stay up, losing bodies from the back at this stage of the season is a real problem.
Head-to-Head
The recent H2H record makes for interesting reading. Oxford edged a 1-0 win at their place back in October of this season, and the reverse fixture at Pride Park in February ended 0-0. So Derby haven't beaten Oxford in their last two Championship meetings, which is worth factoring in. Last season in the Championship it was also 1-1 at Oxford's ground.
Go back further and Derby did win 3-2 at Oxford in League One in December 2023, so they know how to beat them. The 0-0 in February at Pride Park is the one that gives you pause before slamming Derby, but that was a different moment in the season and Oxford were arguably better placed then than they are now.
The Betting Angle
Derby at 1.97 to win at home is decent value given the table positions. They're a top-half side with genuine play-off ambitions, facing a bottom-three outfit who don't travel well. Morris and Agyemang have the goals between them to unlock this Oxford defence, and Bloomfield's injury worries at the back only add to the case.
The 0-0 draw in February is the one counterpoint, and you can't dismiss Oxford's ability to frustrate. But that was a different moment in the campaign. With the season in its final weeks and both sides desperate for different reasons, Derby have far more to play for in terms of momentum and are the better team on paper right now. Back them at home.
Odds: 1.97 — PMU (FR)
Derby are the stronger side on every metric that matters: league position, home record, attacking output, and squad depth. Oxford's defensive injuries and poor away form make Pride Park a tough place to visit. Eustace's side have too much firepower for a 22nd-placed team missing key defenders.
