Sligo, Tuesday 9 June 2026: Tips and Analysis

Seven races at Sligo under good ground with showers forecast. The track rewards horses that stay well and jump cleanly, and with Willie Mullins sending runners across the card, the booking of Patrick Mullins in the 7:30 is an immediate eye-catcher. That jockey’s 47% course strike rate and John Shinnick’s remarkable 1.89 A/E make two of tonight’s key selections almost write themselves.

5:55 โ€” Stephen Mullins and Sons Mares Maiden Hurdle (2m1ยฝf)

Eleven mares and a fair amount of moderate form on show. The race looks straightforward enough once you cut through the noise. Family Getaway is the 9/4 favourite for Gordon Elliott and will attract plenty of interest given her pedigree, but the Spotlight tells you she has looked out of her depth in maidens won by some very smart animals. Elliott’s 16% Sligo strike rate is fine on volume but the A/E of 0.76 suggests the yard’s runners here don’t outperform expectations.

The one I want is Clash Gold at 7/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet). Mike O’Connor takes the ride for Francis Flood on a mare who made a mildly encouraging bumper debut in a contest that read well in hindsight. She was fifth at Tramore in April, taking a step forward from her earlier Fairyhouse runs, and this 2m1ยฝf trip suits better than the 2m4f she had been running over. The Spotlight flags a place chance at minimum, and with the field this open, 7/2 for a mare moving in the right direction on a track that can bring modest improvement to the fore looks fair each-way value in an 11-runner field.

Selection: Clash Gold Each-Way 7/2 Boyle Sports/Betfred

6:30 โ€” RSS Record Storage Service Maiden Hurdle (2m1ยฝf)

Sixteen runners and Willie Mullins fields the standout on paper. Koliath De Couely is the 4/5 favourite ridden by John Shinnick, whose 23% Sligo course strike rate comes with that extraordinary 1.89 A/E, meaning his mounts massively outperform their odds at this venue. Koliath cost โ‚ฌ150,000, was beaten a short head on his only start in France, and Mullins does not run these expensive types in 16-runner maiden hurdles at Sligo unless they are expected to do the job. In a race where the Spotlight frankly struggles to find much to like about most of the field, this one stands alone.

The each-way alternative worth noting is Killowen House at 15/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Half-brother to the talented Chantry House, he got off the mark in points at Quakerstown in April and shaped with genuine promise on his hurdling debut at Cork behind a Mullins stablemate. The shorter trip here is a slight concern, but the Spotlight rates it a fair chance regardless, and 15/2 in a 16-runner maiden hurdle from a yard that has sent out a winner from their last 13 runners makes him a worthwhile each-way consideration.

Selection: Koliath De Couely 4/5 Boyle Sports/Betfred, each-way saver on Killowen House Each-Way 15/2

7:30 โ€” Glasshouse Hotel Handicap Hurdle (3m2f)

Seventeen runners over three miles two furlongs, and this is the race of the evening. Patrick Mullins takes the ride on Private Policy at 5/1 for Nigel Slevin, and that booking alone sharpens the interest considerably. Mullins at Sligo wins at 47% and his A/E of 1.05 tells you he rarely takes rides here without reason.

The form angle is compelling too. Private Policy battled hard to win at Punchestown last time over three miles, his first career success, and the Spotlight notes he is lightly raced for an eight-year-old and likely still improving. He goes up 6lb for that win, which is fair enough, and the good ground suits a horse who has shown he handles varying conditions. Three miles two furlongs asks a bit more of him in terms of stamina, but the Punchestown win showed real resolve and staying power.

Aine’s Lad Each-Way at 15/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is worth putting alongside as an each-way player. He won well at Thurles in February, ran a fair chase debut at Fairyhouse, and has form at this course. The Spotlight acknowledges the chance directly. In a 17-runner handicap, 15/2 with five places paid at 1/5 odds represents decent each-way value for a horse who goes on good ground and knows the track.

Selection: Private Policy 5/1 Boyle Sports/Betfred, each-way saver on Aine’s Lad 15/2

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksPrivate Policy โ€” Glasshouse Hotel Handicap Hurdle (7:30, Sligo)
Odds: 5/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 5/1 LiveScore Bet, SP Betfred)

Patrick Mullins does not travel to Sligo for handicap hurdles without a serious chance, and his 47% course win rate with an A/E of 1.05 is the standout jockey angle on the card. Private Policy only got off the mark at Punchestown last time but the manner of that win pointed to a horse still on the upgrade, and at eight years old he remains lightly raced. The good ground is no issue, the trip should suit, and 5/1 in a wide-open 17-runner handicap gives excellent value for a horse the Spotlight explicitly flags as a player.
