Metropolitano Under the Spotlight
Atletico Madrid host Celta Vigo at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday afternoon, and Diego Simeone's side have one eye still firmly on the Champions League. They drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the semi-final first leg just days ago, which means this La Liga fixture carries a slightly awkward energy. Simeone won't want to burn bodies ahead of the return leg, but fourth place needs protecting and you'd back him to put out a competitive side regardless.
La Liga context matters here. Atletico sit fourth on 63 points. Celta are sixth on 47. That gap looks comfortable, but Atletico's away record in the league this season, five wins from 17 games on the road, tells a slightly messier story than the headline position suggests. At home it's been a different matter: 14 wins, one draw, two losses. The Metropolitano has been a fortress.
Form and Firepower
Atletico's last five shows a 2-0 win at Valencia, a draw with Arsenal in the Champions League semi, a 3-2 home win over Athletic Club, then a 2-3 loss away at Elche. There's steel there, but also vulnerability when they're not at their sharpest. Alexander Sรธrloth leads the scoring charts with 12 goals in 31 appearances this season, Julian Alvarez has eight and Griezmann seven. That's genuine attacking depth, and news suggests Alvarez is in line to return to the squad, which would be a boost.
Celta come in struggling. Three losses from their last four, conceding 10 goals across those five matches. They were hammered 3-1 at home by Elche before bouncing back with a win of their own against the same opponents, then shipped three goals to SC Freiburg and three more to Oviedo at the Balaidos. Borja Iglesias has been their standout performer with 13 goals in 31 appearances this season, and he's capable of anything on his day, but he needs service that Celta have been failing to provide consistently.
Williot Swedberg, who has contributed four goals and four assists, is missing through injury alongside Franco Cervi and Pablo Duran. That takes creativity and directness out of their setup at exactly the wrong moment.
Injuries and Selection
Atletico have their own absentees to deal with. Jose Gimenez, Alex Baena, and Tomas Almada are all missing. Losing Gimenez at centre-back is a concern against a striker of Iglesias's quality, and Baena's absence thins out the midfield options. But Simeone has the squad depth to absorb it, and with so much riding on the Arsenal second leg, expect a side that's strong enough to handle Celta without needlessly stretching anyone's minutes.
Head-to-Head and the Betting Angle
Recent meetings between these clubs have been tight. The last five head-to-heads include three draws or single-goal results. Celta held Atletico to 1-1 in Vigo back in October 2025, and the reverse fixture earlier in 2025/26 also ended 1-1. You have to go back to last season's trip to Vigo, when Atletico won 1-0, to find a clean result, and even then it was narrow.
The pattern of tight scorelines could tempt you toward Under 2.5 Goals at 2.07. But the form picture complicates that. Atletico put three past Athletic Club at home recently. Celta have been leaking goals away from home this season, winning seven away but conceding freely. Simeone's side averaging goals at the Metropolitano across their home run, and Celta's defensive absences through injury, point toward a game where Atletico find the net more than once.
The hosts at 2.35 is the call. Simeone's home record speaks for itself, Celta are in poor form and short on their best players, and Atletico have the motivation of maintaining fourth ahead of European competition returning. At just over 2.35, there's genuine value for a side who've been almost unbeatable in Madrid this season.
Odds: 2.35 โ Pinnacle
Atletico have won 14 home league games this season and Celta are arriving injured, out of form, and with three losses in their last four. Simeone keeps his side organized regardless of fixture congestion, and the gulf in quality between these two squads should show at the Metropolitano.
