About Grand National 2026

The Race

The Grand National is run over 4 miles 2 furlongs and 74 yards at Aintree, with 30 fences across two circuits. It is the longest and most demanding jump race in the world. Fields of 40 horses start in a massed charge, and the winner requires stamina, jumping ability, good fortune, and a jockey who knows when to sit and wait. It has been run at Aintree since 1839 and draws a global audience of over 600 million.

The Fences

The National fences are unique. Built from spruce on a birch base with a landing side that slopes away, they are nothing like standard chase fences. Becher Brook, the Canal Turn, Valentine Brook, and The Chair are the most famous. The Chair at fence 15 is the tallest on the course at 5 foot 2 inches with a 6-foot ditch. Horses that handle the drop fences and the tight Canal Turn tend to outperform their official ratings here.

Betting Angle
Weights matter enormously. Horses carrying 10-11 have won at a higher rate than those near the top weight. The handicapper sets the weights, not the market.
Market Tip
Favourites have a poor record. Only three favourites won since 1990. Historical value lies in the 20/1 to 40/1 range where place returns are generous.
Course Form
Previous Aintree experience counts. Horses that have run well at the track before, particularly in the Becher Chase or the Topham, adapt faster to the unique fences.
Each-Way
With 40 runners, standard each-way terms are 5 places at 1/4 odds. A 33/1 shot finishing fifth pays back nearly 9/1 on the place part alone.
