Killarney, Friday 21 August 2026: Tips and Best Bets
A seven-race card at Killarney on good ground, and there are some genuinely interesting angles to pull apart. The Kerry track rewards horses that handle the undulations well, and on good going the form tends to hold up. Declan McDonogh’s course record here is exceptional (19% wins, A/E of 1.27) and Scott McCullagh’s Killarney figures are even more striking at 1.41 A/E from a smaller sample. Worth keeping both names in mind as the card unfolds.
Three races stand out for punters looking for value. Here is the breakdown.
5:47 โ CSG Rated Race (1m, Good)
Eight runners over a mile and Dermot Weld’s Elmakaya Each-Way catches the eye at 9/1 with Boyle Sports. She has been knocking on the door in recent starts, posting a second and a third in her last two outings before a fourth last time, and she has the course and distance form to match today’s conditions. Weld’s overall Killarney strike rate of 23% is the best of any trainer at this venue, and even at 1/14 over the past fortnight the yard is ticking over. The 133lb weight concession to the top weights is a genuine advantage, and Chris Hayes is a smart booking for a race like this.
The danger is Manton Bay at 2/1, who was second last time out and has the right profile, but the David Marnane yard is without a winner in 14 attempts over the last fortnight and that is a flag you cannot ignore in a competitive rated race. At 2/1, Manton Bay offers no value even if he is the logical pick on form. Elmakaya at 9/1 for a Weld filly creeping closer race by race is the bet.
- Selection: Elmakaya (9/1, Boyle Sports)
- Each-way: 3 places at 1/5 odds
- Jockey: Chris Hayes
- Angle: Weld’s Killarney dominance, progressive form, weight in hand
6:20 โ Irish Stallion Farms EBF Vincent O’Brien Ruby Stakes (Listed, 1m, Good)
Listed company and 11 runners, with East Hampton Each-Way at 10/1 across all three books representing solid each-way value in a competitive field. His official rating of 114 ranks him clear at the top of this field, and his experience over today’s trip and going is a genuine asset. The concern is a pair of disappointing runs since his placed effort, and the David Marnane yard’s 0/14 in the past fortnight will put some off. That cold spell, though, is exactly why 10/1 is available about the top-rated runner in a Listed race.
Jagged Edge at 4/1 is the market leader and has solid claims. He was third two starts back and won four starts back, and Stephen Thorne’s horse gets a decent draw in stall two. But 4/1 in an 11-runner Listed race where the form is patchy is not a price I want to be taking. Carolina Jetstream at 9/2 is lighter weight on 130lb as a filly and has legitimate credentials, but a 55-day absence and two modest efforts since her placed finish are enough to keep me off.
East Hampton each-way at 10/1, with three places on offer at 1/5 odds, is the play. If he bounces back to near his best, he wins this.
- Selection: East Hampton (10/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)
- Each-way: 3 places at 1/5 odds
- Jockey: Luke McAteer
- Angle: Top-rated on 114, distance and going experience, value price
7:20 โ Kellihers Toyota Kingdom Gold Cup Handicap (1m6ยฝf, Good)
The big one of the evening. Thirteen runners over nearly two miles and four places at 1/5 odds make this a proper each-way betting heat. Eagle Fang at 9/2 is the selection, and the case is straightforward: a winner two starts back, placed three starts back, 25 days fresh, and experience over today’s trip and going. William Durkan’s yard has gone 1/4 in the past fortnight, which is a small sample but a live strike rate. The 136lb weight is manageable for a horse in this kind of form.
Factual Fact at 10/1 with LiveScore Bet deserves a mention. Henry De Bromhead is firing at 17% at Killarney with an A/E of exactly 1.00, and Factual Fact has a win and three seconds in recent starts. The 54-day absence is the question mark, but at 10/1 he is a live each-way alternative if you want to spread the risk in a 13-runner handicap.
War Rooms at 8/1 won last time out but four of his previous five were modest, and 133lb on a mark of 89 looks stiff. Light Up The Dark for Joseph O’Brien at 6/1 with Dylan Browne McMonagle up is interesting given the trainer’s Killarney form, but that ninth last time out is too recent to ignore.
Eagle Fang each-way at 9/2 is the clear pick.
- Selection: Eagle Fang Each-Way (9/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred)
- Each-way: 4 places at 1/5 odds
- Jockey: Chris Hayes
- Angle: Recent winner, fit from 25-day break, distance and going suits, yard in form
Today’s NAP
Odds: 9/2 โ Boyle Sports (others: 9/2 Betfred, 9/2 LiveScore Bet)
A winner two starts back and placed three starts back, Eagle Fang arrives fit on 25 days’ rest with the right profile for this trip and good ground at Killarney. Durkan’s yard has a live 14-day strike rate and the 9/2 price in a 13-runner handicap with four each-way places represents genuine value against a field where most rivals have question marks around recent form or trainer conditions. This is the standout bet on the card.
