The track rewards front-runners and strong-galloping types over the longer trips, and the going suits horses with a bit of class rather than pure speedsters. 5:40 — Darley EBF Novice Stakes (1m3f)

Three runners makes this straightforward on paper, but the betting is where the story is. Lord d’Or (Callum Rodriguez, Andrew Balding) is the 4/7 favourite off a form line of 6-222, and Balding’s 30% course record is excellent. Three consecutive placed finishes suggest a horse crying out for a win, but 4/7 in a three-runner novice off the back of three losses is short enough to need a compelling reason. Lord d’Or is close to winning, just not a price you want to be taking every day of the week.

The value angle is Flagbearer (Cieren Fallon, William Haggas) at 4/1. Haggas sends out 31% winners at Hamilton and has been in decent form over the past fortnight. Flagbearer is a three-year-old with a single run to his name, and a yard that knows this track well is worth following on a lightly-raced horse. Fallon is a quality booking for a three-runner novice. At four times the price of a horse that keeps finishing second, the gamble is worth taking.

6:15 — Scullion Law Lanark Silver Bell Heritage Handicap (1m4f)

The feature race, worth over £53,000, draws 15 runners and is the race of the day. Four places at 1/5 odds gives plenty of each-way options, and the field is competitive enough to make selection genuinely tricky.

The horse that jumps out is El Burhan Each-Way (Pat Cosgrave, George Boughey) at 5/1 with Boyle Sports. Boughey’s Hamilton record is exceptional, 33% winners from 24 runners with an A/E of 1.13, meaning he actively outperforms the market at this track. Cosgrave hits 15% at the course too, so the team is familiar with what Hamilton demands. El Burhan was third last time out, has winning form at the trip, and the Good To Soft ground suits. The 15-day turnaround is tight but there is no suggestion this is a rushed job given the prize money on offer. The 140lb burden is the one negative, but the trainer angle is strong enough to take on.

Noble Horizon (Callum Rodriguez, Oli Rix) is the 7/2 market mover and the form reads well, winning two starts back and runner-up last time out. He rates close to his official mark of 97 and arrives fresh. At shorter odds than El Burhan with a less compelling trainer profile, he is the obvious rival rather than the one to be on.

Evanesco (David Egan, Charlie Johnston) at 6/1 is worth noting. Third last time out, winner four starts back, and Egan has 23% course winners at Hamilton. The patchy run of form is a concern, but the price makes him a respectable each-way dart if you want an alternative.

Thirteen runners over five furlongs on Good To Soft. The market speaks clearly here, with Jordan Electrics (Mark Winn, Jim Goldie) at 4/1 as the solid favourite off the back of a win last time out. Goldie’s yard is hitting 4/38 over 14 days, which is modest, and the 10-year-old is carrying 136lb from stall 12 in a tight sprint. He can win again but he is not the value angle.

Germanic Each-Way (Ryan Sexton, Julie Camacho) at 10/1 Boyle Sports is the one that catches the eye. Two starts back he won, he has the trip and going ticked off, and the rating of 93 is competitive. Camacho’s 18% course record at Hamilton is solid despite a quiet recent fortnight. The worry is the trainer’s 5% strike-rate over the past 14 days, so this is firmly an each-way play rather than a win bet. Four places at 1/5 in a 13-runner handicap makes the each-way terms reasonable, and 10/1 is a price that rewards you properly if he runs into a place.

Vantheman (Tom Eaves, Kevin Ryan) at 11/2 is the other one worth watching. Kevin Ryan hits 20% at Hamilton with an A/E of 1.12, meaning he genuinely outperforms expectations at the track. The recent form of 013445 is consistent without being flashy. At 11/2 he is a fair each-way option if the Ryan yard angle appeals more than the Camacho one.
