Yanhan Zhou Sets the Pace at Kitzbuhel
Yanhan Zhou has stormed to the top of the leaderboard at the Austrian Alpine Open, carding an impressive 62 to lead by one shot after Round 1. The Chinese player’s eight-under opening sets a commanding tone at Kitzbuhel-Schwarzsee GC, with Ricardo Gouveia in second at seven-under. A cluster of seven players sits two shots back at six-under: Marcel Schneider, Davis Bryant, Brandon Robinson Thompson, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Tobias Jonsson and Lucas Bjerregaard all within striking distance.
Our Pre-Tournament Pick
Mikael Lindberg, our pre-event selection, posted a one-under 68 in Round 1 and sits on two-under for the tournament. He’s currently tied roughly 30th on the leaderboard, six shots adrift of the leader. The Austrian Alpine Open is proving demanding early, and our pick needs a strong Round 2 to claw back into contention. Still plenty of golf to play, but he’ll need a low round at the earliest opportunity.
Who’s in Contention
Zhou’s eight-under screams danger for the field. At 125/1 with bet365, the market hasn’t fully caught up to what we’re seeing on the board. Ricardo Gouveia at 90/1 makes marginally more sense from a betting angle, though he too is getting unfair odds given his position just one shot back. Marcel Schneider and Davis Bryant both sit at 75/1 and are within two, making them the pick of the shortening field. The tournament is genuinely open across the top eight, with no one running away, but Zhou’s opening gives him tangible advantage heading into Friday.
Round 2 Betting Angles
Watch for moves from Schneider and Bryant. Both carded 64s in challenging conditions and sit at six-under, just two shots back. If either finds another gear on moving day, they’ll quickly tighten the margin. Conversely, Zhou will face obvious pressure as overnight leader. First-round leaders often struggle with the mental burden at altitude courses like Kitzbuhel. Gouveia, the closest pursuer, offers value at 90/1 if you’re backing him to chase down the Chinese player over the next 54 holes. The cut will fall sharply after Round 2, so every shot counts for players clustered around five-under. Lindberg’s position is precarious.
Our Updated Pick
Odds: 75/1 – bet365
Schneider’s 64 in Round 1 demonstrates course control and composure. Two shots back from Zhou, he sits in a prime attacking position for Round 2 without the burden of leading. At 75/1, he’s significantly better value than Zhou or Gouveia, and his consistency makes him a genuine contender over the final three rounds at Kitzbuhel-Schwarzsee.
