Ayr, Tuesday 5 May 2026 — Good To Firm Across The Card
Seven races on the Ayr card today on ground that should suit quick, handy types throughout. Good to firm conditions separate the genuine speedsters from horses that want a bit more cut, so going preferences matter more than usual here. Three races are featured below, with the mile handicap looking the most competitive heat of the afternoon.
2:00 — Weddings At Western House Hotel Maiden Stakes (6f)
Railwayman is the likely winner here and the market agrees, but there is a case to make for this one on form rather than just reputation. The Karl Burke-trained colt cost 420,000 guineas as a yearling and his siblings include dual Group 1 sprint scorer Oxted, so the pedigree screams speed. On debut at Leicester over six furlongs on good ground, he was third of 13 behind two previous winners while wearing a tongue-tie, which is a solid enough foundation. Burke has been in decent form with eight winners from 45 runners in the past fortnight, and good to firm at Ayr is exactly the sort of surface this horse wants.
The danger is Stoneacre Joe at 3/1. Tim Easterby gelded him after his sole two-year-old start and he came back a different horse, finishing second of 14 at Doncaster over six furlongs on good to firm. The form looks solid and the price has real appeal, but Railwayman gets the nod on pedigree ceiling and trainer confidence.
Selection: Railwayman at 4/9 (William Hill, Coral). Best odds exchange: 1.54 Betfair.
4:00 — Book Unite Scotland Summer Raceday Handicap (1m)
Eve's Boy Each-Way is the selection at 11/4 with Bet365 and William Hill. Michael Dods sends this four-year-old back to a track where he has already won, and that course form is significant. His handicap mark sat 15lb higher at its peak, so he is operating off a generous-looking weight now. The most recent run at Thirsk over a mile on good ground saw him finish a close second, and the switch back to turf from the all-weather clearly suited him. Connor Beasley keeps the ride, which is positive continuity. Dods has three winners from 21 runners in the past two weeks, which is a respectable enough strike rate for a yard that tends to deliver results when conditions align.
Rajapour is the main danger and the spotlight data makes him hard to ignore. David O'Meara's six-year-old looked genuinely unlucky at Wetherby nine days ago in new headgear, meeting traffic on good to firm ground over this exact trip. He retains the cheekpieces today and runs off the same mark. O'Meara has eight winners from 59 runners in the past fortnight, which is a decent yard in form. Rajapour is a genuine alternative if you want to side against Eve's Boy.
Selection: Eve's Boy at 11/4 (Bet365, William Hill). Each-way recommended at these terms.
4:30 — Ayr Racecourse Racing Club Handicap (6f)
The Gay Blade at 11/4 (William Hill, Coral) is the pick in this seven-runner sprint handicap. The seven-year-old Iain Jardine gelding has a recent form line of 411412, which tells you everything you need to know about current consistency. He has been placed or winning in five of his last six starts and that level of reliability in a small field is exactly what you want at this price. The concern is Jardine's stable stats of 2/23 in the past fortnight, which is below par, but the horse's own form is doing the talking regardless of yard temperature.
Taygar is favourite at 5/2 but the form line of 3008-8 does not exactly inspire confidence. Iris Dancer is 0-9 at Ayr despite winning at Hamilton, and that course stat is damning enough to push her out of the reckoning.
Selection: The Gay Blade at 11/4 (William Hill, Coral).
Today's NAP
Odds: 11/4 — Bet365 (others: 11/4 William Hill, 2.8 Betfair Exchange)
Eve's Boy has already won at Ayr, is racing off a mark 15lb below his career peak, and his most recent run on turf at Thirsk over this exact distance resulted in a close second. Good to firm ground suits him and Connor Beasley provides continuity in the saddle. At 11/4 with proven course form and an attractive handicap mark, this is the best-value selection on the card.
