Ballinrobe, Thursday 17 April 2026: Tips and Selections
Ballinrobe opens its 2026 season on soft ground this evening, and that going tag is the dominant filter across all seven races. The western track rewards horses who travel well in the mud, and tonight's card is loaded with handicap intrigue. Three races stand out as genuine betting opportunities, so let's cut straight to them.
5:00 โ Treacy's Pharmacies Mares Maiden Hurdle (2m1f, Soft, 18 runners)
An 18-runner maiden hurdle is always a lottery, but pedigree counts for plenty in an inexperienced field and one debutante catches the eye immediately.
Holly's Thunder Each-Way (11/1, Bet365, William Hill and Coral) has never been seen on a track, but her breeding reads like a shortlist of staying jumps royalty. She is a half-sister to Don Poli, Debece and Politesse, three horses who won across a range of distances over hurdles and fences and who all handled soft ground without complaint. The Crystal Ocean cross gives you a horse built for stamina, and 2m1f on a soft evening at Ballinrobe is precisely the assignment you want for a first-timer out of this family. The dam won at 2m on the Flat. Trainer Lorna Fowler does not send horses on long trips without a decent chance, and at 11/1 in a wide-open 18-runner maiden, each-way at three places makes obvious sense. The rest of this field has significant question marks: Cool As A Cat unseated at the first on debut, Dictionary Corner has refused and been pulled up, and the bulk of the remainder lack any meaningful form. Holly's Thunder takes the field on potential alone, and that is more than enough at this price.
6:00 โ McGrath Limestone Works Handicap Hurdle (2m1f, Soft, 14 runners)
Henry De Bromhead's Becasse (9/2 Betfred, 4/1 William Hill and Coral) is the most interesting horse on the card. The French import was bought for 40,000 euros specifically because he won on very soft ground in France, and his comeback run at Wexford last month ticks every box. He finished second on soft, over 2m, after a 519-day absence, at 11/1. That is not a horse who needed the run; that is a horse who is ready to win. The step back up to 2m1f suits, the soft ground at Ballinrobe is ideal, and De Bromhead's yard has sent out six winners in the last 14 days, suggesting the operation is in decent form. The 4/1 available with William Hill and Coral is the price to take.
Frankendael at 7/1 (William Hill, Coral) is the danger. He won a C&D maiden hurdle here on yielding to soft and followed up in a Listed handicap at Listowel off 116. The concern is a lengthy absence since June last year, and McNamara's yard has not had a winner in eight attempts over the last two weeks. Becasse is preferred, but Frankendael deserves a place in your exotics if you are building a combination.
6:30 โ BOYLE Sports Supporting Irish Racing Mares Handicap Hurdle (2m5ยฝf, Soft, 10 runners)
The staying mares' handicap is the most competitive race on the card and it deserves careful dissection.
Carry On Heidi (4/1 Bet365 and Betfred, 7/2 William Hill) is the each-way shout here. She won her maiden hurdle over 2m4f on yielding ground and has run with genuine credit in a pair of Grade 3 novice events since. This is a drop back to handicap company, a top 5lb claimer in the saddle, and the soft ground does not inconvenience a mare who has always shown her best form with ease underfoot. The concern is whether the step up to 2m5.5f stretches her stamina, but her point-to-point background and jumping profile suggest she will stay. A horse dropping from Grade 3 novice level into a 10-runner handicap can take time to adjust, but the price is right for each-way interest.
Maxios Prime (5/1, Betfred, Bet Victor, talkSPORT Bet) also warrants serious respect. She has been in the frame consistently in handicaps, her fourth at the Dublin Racing Festival behind the progressive Cousin Kate reads better with every passing week, and the P.J. Rothwell yard won this specific race in 2022 and 2024. Course form in trainer stats matters, and that angle is too strong to ignore entirely. She tackles this longer trip for the first time, though, which introduces an element of risk on soft ground.
Katie Daniels (9/2 Bet365) won at Fairyhouse 12 days ago but that was a fortuitous success when Royal Soldier fell at the last. She faces a 7lb rise, which wipes out much of the advantage a winner usually carries. Pass at the current price.
Today's NAP
Odds: 4/1 โ William Hill (others: 4/1 Coral, 9/2 Betfred)
A French import bought specifically for his soft-ground ability, Becasse ran a career-defining comeback at Wexford last month: second at 11/1 after a 519-day layoff, on soft, over the right trip. Henry De Bromhead's yard is firing with six winners in the last fortnight, tonight's soft conditions at Ballinrobe match the horse perfectly, and a race like this was clearly the target from the moment he was purchased. The 4/1 is fair value in a 14-runner handicap and this is the most confident call on the card.
