Ballinrobe, Tuesday 26 May 2026 — Tips & Preview
A sharp eight-race card at Ballinrobe on good ground. The western circuit track plays to horses who handle a flat-ish, galloping track well, and the good ground today suits horses with a bit of class rather than mud-lovers. Three races stand out for punters looking for an angle, and we have a very clear NAP on the card.
7:00 — Monroe’s Live John & Margaret Monroe Memorial Mares Handicap Hurdle (2m, Hurdle)
Selection: Astelia at 11/4 (Boyle Sports, Betfred)
Astelia is the most straightforward case on the card. Runner-up in five of her seven hurdle starts, she showed exactly what she is capable of at Down Royal on her first run since November, and that comeback effort over a longer trip tells you she is fit and in form coming here. Critically, she is noted as suited by good ground, and she gets it today. Trainer Peter Fahey’s 14-day numbers are quiet, but this mare does not need the yard to be firing on all cylinders — she has been knocking on the door consistently. The 11/4 is fair rather than exceptional, but in a 10-runner mares’ handicap, she is the most reliable win proposition. Paul’s Dream at 4/1 is the main danger, with decent form in the first half of last season, but Astelia’s Down Royal run gives her a fitness edge.
4:55 — Auray Assessors Fillies Maiden Hurdle (2m, Hurdle)
Selection: Ismahane at 3/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred)
The key angle here is the P Twomey connection. That trainer has an extraordinary 75% win rate at Ballinrobe from 12 attempts, with an A/E of 2.27. When Twomey sends one to this track, it pays to sit up and take notice. Ismahane has a proper Flat pedigree — Group 3-placed in Italy and a Flat winner in Germany — and was green on her hurdles debut at Thurles in January, finishing a well-beaten fourth. That greenness is expected to improve, and the good ground will suit a mare built more like a Flat horse. Jockey Daniel King, who partners her, posts a strong A/E of 1.54 at this track. The combination of trainer, jockey, course stats, and scope for improvement makes this the most compelling angle in the race. Cinating for Gordon Elliott is respected at 9/2, with bumper experience to draw on, but Twomey’s record here is simply too good to ignore.
5:30 — KPMG Hurdle (2m, Hurdle)
Selection: Immediate Effect at 9/4 (Boyle Sports, Betfred)
Only six runners and a race that lacks depth, but Immediate Effect makes the most appeal. He won on his hurdles debut at Punchestown last New Year’s Eve and ran respectably in a Grade 1 before dropping back to novice level. His second to a Mullins outsider at the Punchestown festival was a solid effort, and the notes confirm good ground suits him. Gordon Elliott has a strong hand in this race with Porcupine Bank also in the field, but Immediate Effect has the higher RPR at 135 and the more reliable profile. Paul Townend partners Kai Lung for Mullins, and Townend has an 18% record at Ballinrobe, but Kai Lung’s recent form is deeply concerning — pulled up, unseated, and tailed off in three consecutive starts. The tongue-tie and hood change signal Mullins is trying to find a solution, but that is not an angle you want to trust at short odds. Munsif at 4/1 is interesting as a former Roger Varian-trained Flat horse who has placed three times over Irish hurdles, but he hung badly at Ascot last time. Immediate Effect is the most solid option in what looks a winnable race.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 3/1 — Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred, 11/4 LiveScore Bet)
The P Twomey yard wins at 75% at Ballinrobe, and that stat alone would make Ismahane hard to oppose. Add in Daniel King’s positive A/E of 1.54 at this track, the step up from a green but educational hurdles debut, and the good ground that suits her Flat-bred profile, and this is a horse with every reason to improve sharply. Group 3-placed on the Flat in Italy before switching codes, she cost serious money and the connections clearly believe in her. At 3/1 in an open fillies’ maiden, that is a price worth taking with both hands.
