Bath, Wednesday 29 April 2026 — Firm Ground, Three Races to Focus On

Bath on firm ground is a proper test of speed and class. The straight five and five-and-a-half furlong courses here reward horses that travel well and finish strongly, and today's firm surface will sort the wheat from the chaff quickly. Three races stand out for punters looking for value, and one of them has a selection that looks thrown in at the weights.

4:10 — Bet Now With fairplaybet.co.uk Handicap (5½f, Firm)

Selection: Thecoffeepoddotco — 5/2 Bet365 (9/4 William Hill, 4.2 Betfair Exchange)

Richard Hannon's four-year-old filly has been knocking on the door and this looks the right race at the right time. Both of her wins have come over five furlongs at Lingfield on the all-weather, but she posted a decent third over six furlongs there last month and her Musselburgh run on soft ground should be discounted entirely. This is a filly who wants quick turf, and Bath on firm fits the bill perfectly.

The Hannon yard has hit a rate of six winners from 52 runners in the past fortnight, which is respectable volume, and jockey Joe Leavy keeps the ride. The danger is the market leader Silver Wraith, who won over this course and distance last October, but that came on good to soft ground and she now faces a 3lb higher mark returning on much faster going. That quicker surface is a genuine query for Emma Lavelle's filly. Thecoffeepoddotco gets in 3lb lighter and the pace angle suits. Take the 5/2.

5:20 — "Confined" Handicap (5f, Firm)

Selection: Connie's Rose — 9/2 Bet365 (5/1 Midnite, 6.6 Betfair Exchange)

Two wins over this exact course and distance tells you everything you need to know about the suitability of this assignment. Connie's Rose is a front-runner who has posted ten turf victories in total, and Grace Harris sends her back here after a run last time over the slightly longer five-and-a-half furlong trip that looked exactly like a pipe-opener after 179 days off. She finished fifth of eleven that day and the step back to five furlongs, dropping back in grade, is a clear positive move from connections.

Binadham is the market leader at 13/8 and the cheekpieces have clearly helped him find more consistency, but he is yet to win on turf and this is his first attempt at the surface since switching back from all-weather. That is a question he needs to answer. Rogue Bullet has course form and won on good to firm last season, but 187 days off the track is a significant concern. Connie's Rose knows the job here, and at 9/2 she looks overpriced.

4:45 — Download The Fairplay App Now EBF Maiden Stakes (5½f, Firm)

Selection: Dowman — 13/8 Bet365 (11/8 William Hill, 2.4 Betfair Exchange)

Maiden betting is always a case of reading between the lines, but Dowman has already shown ability with a second-place finish from his debut and arrives here with Billy Loughnane in the saddle, a jockey who does not get on well-fancied youngsters by accident. George Boughey's operation has landed one winner from fourteen runners in the past fortnight, but the trainer is perfectly capable of landing a two-year-old maiden at a track like Bath.

The form he showed on debut is a clear form line in what is otherwise a field of unknown quantities. Several of the newcomers here, including the two Dylan Cunha runners at 50/1 and 66/1, are complete unknowns. Holliesthedollie has an interesting pedigree as a half-sister to a useful five-furlong winner, and Jonathan Portman's yard has been in red-hot form with five winners from thirteen runners in the past two weeks, so watch the market on her. Ariane Sky with Hollie Doyle up is another to monitor on debut. However, Dowman's race experience edges it, and the favourite tag looks deserved at the current price.

Each-Way Note: If you want to play the maiden with an outsider angle, Holliesthedollie Each-Way at 28/1 is worth a small interest given the Portman stable's current form and the pedigree connection to a winning five-furlong horse. Three places at 1/5 odds gives you coverage.

Today's NAP

Connie's Rose — 5:20 "Confined" Handicap, Bath
Odds: 9/2 — Bet365 (others: 5/1 Midnite, 6.6 Betfair Exchange)

Two course and distance wins make this a standout angle on firm ground at Bath. She had every excuse last time out on her seasonal return over a slightly longer trip and the drop back to five furlongs in a weaker race looks a deliberate and well-timed move. The market leader Binadham is unproven on turf and Rogue Bullet carries a 187-day absence. Connie's Rose knows exactly what is required here, and 9/2 underestimates her chance significantly.
