A six-race card at Beverley on a Tuesday in mid-July won’t turn many heads, but it throws up a couple of genuinely interesting angles. Andrew Balding’s 29% course strike rate makes him the standout trainer statistic at this track, while David Loughnane’s A/E of 1.51 over 85 runners tells you his horses consistently outperform their odds here. Keep both yards in mind as the card unfolds. Going remains officially unknown at time of writing, so watch market moves for clues before you place anything.

With Glorious Goodwood now less than a fortnight away, connections of anything unexposed or lightly raced will be eyeing the July entries carefully. Don’t be surprised if one or two horses today are here for a sharpener rather than a serious crack at the prize money.

2:17 — EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (5f)

This is a four-runner maiden and there isn’t much of a puzzle to solve. Fast Track (Andrew Balding / P J McDonald) is a short-priced favourite at 2/11 with Boyle Sports, and at those odds you’re backing the form book to behave itself rather than finding value. Balding runs at 29% at Beverley, the yard is on an 11/60 hit rate over the last fortnight, and PJ McDonald knows this track. The form reads 3-2-0, meaning she’s placed twice and found only one rival too good, which is a perfectly solid foundation for a five-furlong novice.

The only realistic alternative is Kokumi (Daniel Tudhope / Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole) at 4/1 with Boyle Sports. Tudhope hits 18% at this course and his A/E of 0.99 is almost exactly what it says on the tin: reliable, consistent, occasionally finds one too good. Without exposed form figures to lean on, though, this is a guess at a debutant’s ability against a rival who has already shown she can hit the frame.

There’s no value staking argument for Fast Track at 2/11. If you’re playing the race, Kokumi each-way at 4/1 is a speculative flutter, but this is a race to watch rather than attack hard.

Selection: Fast Track (win only, small stake, 2/11 Boyle Sports) — the form angle is there even if the odds make it a qualifying race rather than a betting race.

3:17 — Malcolm Greenslade Doncaster LVA Stalwart Memorial Handicap Stakes (1m2f)

Four runners, and the form book points in one direction. Pendella (K.R. Burke / Sam James) tops the field on ratings at 88, has only once finished outside the frame in six career starts, and is proven at this trip. The yard has sent out seven winners from 41 runners over the last fortnight, a solid 17% strike rate. Burke horses in this sort of consistent mid-table form at a galloping track like Beverley often find a way to win.

The slight hesitation is the 38-day layoff since her last run. Burke horses do occasionally need a run back, but a trainer firing at that clip tends to bring them fit. The 6/4 price at Boyle Sports and Betfred is fair rather than generous, but in a four-runner race with a proven, in-form filly topping the ratings, it’s the right side of the line.

It’s Debatable (Edward Bethell / Connor Beasley) at 5/4 is almost impossibly short for a horse third in the ratings and coming off a modest three-run sequence. Bethell is running at 10/32 over the last 14 days, which is a strong 31% strike rate, but the price asks you to ignore the form of the horse itself.

Tamzan (Marcus Tregoning / Oisin Orr) at 10/3 won last time out but sits bottom of the ratings quartet. Tregoning is 0/6 in the last 14 days, and while Orr hits 19% at Beverley, the overall picture is a winner who needs to step up significantly on figures to beat Pendella.

4:58 — Racing Again On Monday Evening Handicap Stakes (7½f)

The most competitive race on the card. Eight runners, three places paid, and a fascinating ratings spread to unpick.

Thornaby Annie Each-Way (Adrian Nicholls / Jack Garritty) is the angle here at 3/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. She sits second in the ratings, won two starts ago, and posted back-to-back runner-up finishes in the two starts before that. The seventh last time out was below her best, but Nicholls has sent out one winner from eight runners recently and this is a yard known for patient campaigning with fillies. At 3/1 in an eight-runner field paying three places, the each-way case almost makes itself.

The Sweet Escape (David Loughnane / Laura Pearson) is the market leader at 11/8 (Boyle Sports / Betfred). Loughnane’s A/E of 1.51 at Beverley over 85 runners is the standout trainer statistic on the whole card, and this gelding won last time out. The concern is the form surrounding that win: the four finishes before it were largely one-paced, and he returns on just an 11-day turnaround. The yard is firing at 3/12 over 14 days, though, so if Loughnane is confident enough to run him back quickly, that’s a reason to listen.

Shahik (Michael Keady / Kevin Stott) is a peculiar case. He’s rated highest in the field on figures at 79 but hasn’t troubled the frame in his last five starts. Keady is 0/8 in the last fortnight. You can see why the market leaves him at 25/1, and that’s probably right.

Enjoy The Night (Seb Spencer / Shay Farmer) at 12/1 is worth a second look purely because Farmer’s course A/E of 2.15 from 16 rides is exceptional. Spencer has sent out one winner from three runners recently, which is a decent mini-strike rate. But the form figures are poor: nothing better than fifth in five starts. The jockey angle is interesting but the horse’s form doesn’t justify more than a token interest.
