Brighton, Tuesday 9 June: Tips and Best Bets
A six-race card at Brighton on good ground, partly cloudy skies, and a decent mix of handicaps and classified contests to get stuck into. Brighton is quirky enough to reward course specialists, and the jockey stats here are worth noting: Rose Dawes wins at 27% on this track, Jack Callan at 22%. Both are live factors today. Tony Carroll’s yard is firing at 7/45 over the past fortnight, and that volume means their runners deserve respect wherever they appear.
8:51 โ fairplaybet.co.uk Handicap (5ยฝf, 8 runners)
Selection: Secret Handsheikh (7/2, Boyle Sports)
This is the standout bet of the morning. Secret Handsheikh has been dropped 5lb below his last winning mark, and his course and distance record is frankly extraordinary: 3121351123 over C&D. That is not a horse that merely tolerates Brighton, it is a horse that thrives on it. He finished a close third of 13 here just 11 days ago over 6f on good to firm, and the step back to 5.5f is no concern given that C&D form. John Gallagher’s yard is 2/8 in the last 14 days, a solid enough clip, and Jack Callan is your man at 22% on this course.
The obvious rival is Kento, who made all to win over C&D 11 days ago and has Silvestre De Sousa up. But a 4lb penalty for that win is a real question, and De Sousa’s Brighton A/E of 0.86 suggests he somewhat underperforms his strike-rate here. Merrimack is also respected after that near-miss at Newbury, and Stuart Williams does well at Brighton historically, but the yard is 0/14 in the last two weeks, which is a clear cold-spell flag. Ancient State’s sole turf start produced a finish outside the frame and that question mark is hard to ignore.
Secret Handsheikh at 7/2 with a C&D record that reads like a course specialist’s CV is the call.
6:21 โ Apprentice Classified Stakes (7f, 10 runners)
Selection: Banksman (3/1, Boyle Sports)
Classified stakes are tricky to dissect but Banksman has a significant edge here: he is 2/2 at this exact level. Both wins came in classified company around this time last year, and while the switch to Sheena West’s yard has not produced a win in eight starts, he ran respectably in a 0-55 handicap at Brighton just 11 days ago. The step back into classified company plays directly to his strengths. Rose Dawes takes the ride, and she is the standout Brighton jockey in today’s card at 27% wins and an A/E of 1.56. That combination of track specialist jockey and a horse with a proven record at this level makes Banksman the call at 3/1.
Rainbow Sign is the main threat. His fourth of 14 at Bath last time was honest and he has won at Brighton before, but a strike rate of 3/63 makes him a place candidate rather than a confident win selection. Fai Fai is shortlisted by the form guides and his placed record in handicaps around Brighton’s 6f last season is interesting, though the step up to 7f is a slight concern given “just about stays this far.” Horus drops to this level for the first time and the Attwater yard won this race last year, so there is a coincidental angle, but the form profile does not inspire enough confidence to prefer him at 15/2.
6:51 โ Classified Stakes Sprint Series Qualifier (5ยฝf, 8 runners)
Selection: Lynwood Lad Each-Way (11/2, Boyle Sports)
The price feels generous for a horse that won this exact race 12 months ago at 14/1. Lynwood Lad returns to the scene of his sole turf success, over the same trip, at the same venue, in the same contest. The cheekpieces are back on, which were presumably worn when he won last year, and Gary and Josh Moore’s yard is 4/29 over the past fortnight, a healthy clip. Tom Queally is a quality booking.
Big Time Rascal is the rightful favourite and his runner-up efforts at Lingfield and Bath suggest he is coming to form, but he is 1/23 lifetime and the step back to a classified level for a horse who has shown his best form in handicaps is not a certainty. Mister Sandman is respected, dropping into this grade for the first time with a solid frame-finishing record, but at 5/2 the price asks you to back a horse who has never won. Lynwood Lad at 11/2 each-way is the value play in a race where he has already proved himself.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 7/2 โ Boyle Sports (others: 7/2 Betfred, 7/2 LiveScore Bet)
A course and distance record of 3121351123 is as compelling a case for a Brighton specialist as you will find in a field of eight. Dropped 5lb below his last winning mark, returning to a trip he clearly handles better than 6f, and with Jack Callan booked at 22% on this track. The Gallagher yard is in decent form at 2/8 recently. This horse simply loves Brighton and the handicapper has handed him a golden opportunity.
