Brighton, Tuesday 7 July 2026: Best Bets on the South Coast

Brighton serves up a six-race card on Good To Firm ground under partly cloudy skies, and there are some genuinely interesting angles to unpick. The undulating track on the Sussex Downs rewards horses that handle the camber and the peculiar downhill finish, and on fast ground like this, pace and agility matter more than raw power. Three races stand out, and one of them has a bet that looks hard to refuse.

Thirteen runners in a classified stakes on six furlongs, and the two market leaders are both trained by yards that have been cold recently. Big Time Rascal is showing 3/1 at the top of the market, but trainer Michael Attwater is 0/8 in the last 14 days, which is a flag worth heeding. Manhattan Chute at the same price is similarly hard to trust with Jim and Suzi Best 0/4 in recent weeks.

The value call here is Bated Breeze Each-Way at 8/1 with Boyle Sports. Gary and Josh Moore have fired in 4 winners from 31 runners over the past fortnight, the yard is clearly in decent nick, and David Egan in the saddle brings a 15% strike rate at Brighton with 127 rides under his belt here. He knows this track extremely well. Bated Breeze’s recent form includes a run of 933-06, which on the face of it looks moderate, but the horse has been mixing it in slightly better company and a drop to classified level on going that should suit gives this a different look. Three places at 1/5 odds in a 13-runner field makes each-way a genuinely sound option at that price.

Only six runners, so the race boils down to the principals quickly. Radahn is the 10/11 favourite for George Scott, whose Brighton record is exceptional at 27% and an A/E of 1.22, the best of any trainer in the data. The horse has form reading 2, suggesting a debut second, and Scott clearly fancies the step forward here.

But 10/11 is no kind of price when the horse has run once and is taking on a track that punishes those who fail to settle on the descent. The counter-punch is Serenity Bay Each-Way at 9/1 with Boyle Sports or Betfred, trained by Ed Dunlop who is ticking along at 3/18 in the last fortnight. Saffie Osborne takes the ride, and she is a 21% Brighton winner from 112 rides with an A/E of 1.05, meaning she consistently runs to or above her expected level on this track. Serenity Bay’s sole run produced a zero, but debut maidens for Dunlop’s yard often come on significantly for the experience, and seven furlongs on fast ground suits juveniles with a staying pedigree. The 9/1 makes the each-way case compelling given just four rivals to beat into a place at 1/4 odds.

For those who want the winner, Telegraphic at 4/1 with David Egan up is the each-way alternative in the win market. Charlie Johnston is churning through winners at 9/59 in the last 14 days, and a horse that ran fourth on debut has more upside than it might appear.

This is the race of the day. Nine runners over seven furlongs, and the form horse stares out from the page immediately.

Dion Baker for Michael Wigham is the selection at 11/4 with Boyle Sports, Betfred, and LiveScore Bet. The stat that drives this is Wigham’s yard form over the last 14 days: four winners from just eight runners. That is a 50% strike rate. A yard firing like that with a horse in an ordinary 7f Brighton handicap is not something to ignore. Wigham’s overall Brighton record also reads 21% with an A/E of 1.17, confirming he targets this track strategically.

Dion Baker’s recent form is a compelling 411131, six runs that scream a horse on the best run of its career. The gelding is seven years old but age means little when the form is this consistent. Good To Firm is clearly no barrier given the wins have arrived in recent weeks, and the weight of 144lbs confirms the handicapper has caught up a little, but the yard’s extraordinary current form suggests there may be more to find yet.

Prefer The Sister at 5/4 is the favourite and the case is understandable, with James Owen at 26% at Brighton and nine winners from 55 runs recently. But the price is too skinny for a handicap, and Dion Baker is the value at more than double the odds.

Michael Wigham has sent out four winners from eight runners in the last fortnight, a strike rate that demands attention. Dion Baker arrives on a sequence of 411131, the kind of consistent in-form profile that wins races, and Wigham’s 21% Brighton record with an A/E of 1.17 tells you this trainer picks his spots here carefully. At 11/4 in a nine-runner 7f handicap on going that clearly suits, this is the standout bet on the card.
