๐Ÿ“… 5 August 2026 Horse Racing

Brighton, Wednesday 5 August 2026

A midweek card at Brighton on good to firm ground, and three races worth dissecting. The undulating seaside track rewards horses that handle the camber and the quirky finishing straight, so course form carries extra weight here. Eve Johnson Houghton continues to be the dominant training force at this venue, and Oliver Carmichael’s 25% strike rate on this track with an A/E of 2.51 is the standout jockey statistic of the day. When those two combine, you pay attention.

2:30 โ€” Jenningsbet Over 200 Shops Nationwide Handicap Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Five runners only, so each-way terms are tight and selectivity matters. This is a thin race on paper but one runner stands out from the crowd.

Selection: Havana Jag (7/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Love Alive is the market leader and has placed twice in six starts, but consistency without a win at a price this short is a poor return. Cape Toronada is favourite territory and ranked last of five on the figures. Havana Jag catches the eye instead. Third last time out, second two starts back, she has shown a consistent level of performance at this trip and on this going. John Gallagher’s yard is quiet on the 14-day numbers but the filly’s own form trajectory is more important here. In a field this small, she looks overpriced at 7/2 given her placed regularity, and the 6f on good to firm is right in her wheelhouse.

3:00 โ€” Jenningsbet In Deal Classified Stakes (1m, Good To Firm)

Nine runners in a classified event at the mile, and the form figures are murky throughout. Tony Carroll saddles three runners, which always complicates the picture, but one runner makes sense above the rest.

Selection: Rovinia (2/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Back-to-back runner-up finishes tells you this filly is in decent form and running consistently at a level that should be competitive here. Roger Teal’s yard has had a quiet 14 days but the horse’s own trajectory matters more in a race like this. She handles today’s trip and going, draws stall five which is workable on this track, and her consistency makes her the standout among a field where most of the others haven’t troubled the placed positions recently. River Wharfe at 9/4 is winless in six and River Wharfe and Rock Master both carry Tony Carroll’s three-runner complication. Rovinia is cleaner, sharper in recent form, and a fair price at 2/1.

3:30 โ€” Brighton Mile Challenge Handicap Stakes (1m, Good To Firm)

This is the feature race of the day, and the combination of trainer and jockey at the top of the market is one that deserves serious respect.

Selection: Silca Bay (3/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

Oliver Carmichael rides at a 25% strike rate here at Brighton with an A/E of 2.51. That is a remarkable figure and not a sample size to dismiss lightly. Eve Johnson Houghton is one of the best trainers at this track, registering 19% winners with an A/E of 1.17 across a significant sample. When these two combine in a race where Silca Bay is already a winner last time out and a winner three starts back, the angle writes itself.

The 143lb burden is the obvious query, and James Owen’s Sea Suite has been knocking on the door with two runner-up finishes. But Silca Bay arrives fresh on 18 days, has proven form at this trip and on this going, and the trainer-jockey combination at Brighton is the sharpest in the field. Tex at 13/8 is the jolted favourite but that ninth last time out is a concern, and you are getting a better price on a horse in better recent form with the superior course connections. At 3/1, Silca Bay is the call.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksSilca Bay โ€” Brighton Mile Challenge Handicap Stakes (3:30, Brighton)
Odds: 3/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred, 3/1 LiveScore Bet)

The trainer-jockey combination of Eve Johnson Houghton and Oliver Carmichael at Brighton is the standout angle on the card. Carmichael’s A/E of 2.51 at this course is exceptional, Johnson Houghton fires at 19% here with a positive A/E, and Silca Bay arrives as a dual recent winner who handles the trip and the going. The favourite Tex advertised a potential regression with that ninth last time, making 3/1 about Silca Bay a genuine value price in this nine-runner handicap.
