Brighton, Tuesday 30 June: Tips & Analysis

Brighton on Good to Firm in late June is a proper test of turf speed and resolution. The undulating track on the south coast rewards horses that handle the camber, stay relaxed through the early stages, and quicken off a sound surface. With England’s cricketers preparing to host India from tomorrow, it’s a quieter day for the sports pages, but there is a genuinely intriguing card here with some strong form angles to unpick across the six races.

Three races stand out with clear selection cases. Here is the breakdown.

2:43 โ€” Coast Cremations Cup Classified Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

A 12-runner classified stakes over six furlongs, and this is exactly the sort of race where the market leaders flatter to deceive and the value sits mid-table. At 7/4, Manhattan Chute is being backed off a run of five blanks since his last win, including a break, and that is simply too short for the risk involved. The 7/4 shot can be left alone.

Port Hedland is the selection at 11/2 with Boyle Sports. Tony Carroll’s yard is motoring at present, striking at a 9/44 rate over the past 14 days, and this gelding arrives here on the back of a convincing classified win at Bath, winning by three-quarters of a length in professional style. He clearly has a liking for Brighton and the form of that Bath win reads well in this company. The first-time hood adds a layer of interest and Carroll is rarely saddling runners without purpose. The question mark is the step up to six furlongs from a trip he has looked most effective over, but the ground is right and the yard is firing.

Big Time Rascal Each-Way at 4/1 Boyle Sports is worth including each-way in a 12-runner field. Two runner-up finishes in his last four and a decent effort in a classified race at this very track, beaten two lengths, tells you he is competitive at this level. Michael Attwater’s yard is cold at the moment but the horse’s form speaks for itself, and at three places each-way the 4/1 is perfectly workable.

  • Each-Way: Big Time Rascal โ€” 4/1 Boyle Sports

3:13 โ€” Sheephaven Bay Handicap (1m, Good To Firm)

This seven-runner mile handicap is the most competitive race on the card and the market has correctly identified the two main protagonists. King Of War and Rogue Dynasty share the 2/1 market lead, and this is genuinely tight at the top.

King Of War is hard to dismiss. Michael Wigham’s record at Brighton is outstanding, 21% win rate from 98 runners with an A/E of 1.21, one of the best trainer strike rates on the track. The horse bolted up here last time by over three lengths, which is a statement performance in a handicap, and while he carries a 4lb penalty, the yard being in red-hot form makes him dangerous. J F Egan takes the ride and this is a live contender.

But the selection is Rogue Dynasty. James Owen’s filly finished half a length second here last time off a mark 1lb lower than today’s, which is tight, but the key detail is the first-time cheekpieces. Owen knows Brighton well, posting a 24% win rate at the track, and this filly is clearly course-suited at the mile on Good to Firm. Harry Davies, an emerging talent, takes the ride. The cheekpieces often have an immediate effect on horses who have been running competitive races without winning, and the form over this exact course and distance is hard to argue with. At 2/1 she is fair rather than outstanding value, but this looks her race to lose.

Buy The Dip at 9/2 deserves respect after going within a short-head last time, but Pat Cosgrave’s trainer Jim Boyle is winless from five runners in the past fortnight, which is a concern.

  • Selection: Rogue Dynasty โ€” 2/1 Boyle Sports/LiveScore Bet

3:43 โ€” Bet Now With fairplaybet.co.uk Handicap (1m, Good To Firm)

Five runners, small field, and the market has done most of the work here. Hove Ranger at 2/1 is the clear pick from the form book. Gary and Josh Moore’s yard has been in decent nick, three wins from 15 runners over the past fortnight, and Hove Ranger’s form profile is the most straightforward in this race. He won two starts back and followed that with a promising second, before a Goodwood spin over further in easier ground that can be cleanly excused.

Back at the mile on Good to Firm, this is a much more suitable assignment. Rhys Clutterbuck takes the ride and at 2/1 this is a short price, but five runners and a legitimate form angle justify the confidence. Nicola Currie on Denby’s Dream at 5/2 is the main threat, a course and distance suited filly with a first-time hood, and Currie has a 16% win rate at Brighton with an impressive A/E of 1.19. The market is probably right to make this close, but Hove Ranger’s proximity to the form and the yard’s current momentum edges it.

  • Selection: Hove Ranger โ€” 2/1 Boyle Sports/Betfred

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksRogue Dynasty โ€” Sheephaven Bay Handicap (3:13, Brighton)
Odds: 2/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 2/1 LiveScore Bet, SP Betfred)

James Owen’s filly was beaten a neck over this exact course and distance last time, running off a mark 1lb lower than today. She is clearly suited to Brighton’s undulating mile on Good to Firm ground and the addition of first-time cheekpieces is the angle that tips the balance. Owen’s 24% strike rate at this track is the best of any trainer on the card, and with Harry Davies booked and the form screaming course specialist, this is the day she gets her head in front.
