Bristol City vs Stoke City Betting Tips 2026

๐Ÿ“… 1 May 2026 Football English League Championship

End-of-Season Mediocrity on Display at Ashton Gate

Two Championship sides with nothing left to play for except pride, and arguably very little of that either. Bristol City host Stoke City at Ashton Gate on Saturday lunchtime in a fixture that has mid-table malaise written all over it. Roy Hodgson's men sit 13th on 59 points, Stoke are four below them in 17th on 55. The gap in position flatters neither team. Neither is going up, neither is going down. What we do have, though, is a recent H2H record that suggests goals, chaos, and very little defensive organisation.

Form: Both Sides Are a Mess

Bristol City's last five reads: W, D, D, L, L. One win, a couple of draws, and back-to-back losses, including a 4-2 hammering at home to Norwich. They've shipped eight goals and scored six across those five games. The win over Sheffield United feels like a distant memory. Getting turned over by Birmingham away and then drawing at Southampton doesn't scream "momentum" heading into a home fixture at this stage of the season.

Stoke are in a genuinely awful run. Five games: four defeats and a draw. They lost 3-1 at home to Portsmouth, 3-1 at home to Millwall, 2-0 away at Wrexham, and 2-0 away at Derby. That's 11 goals conceded, three scored. Mark Robins is working with a side that has collapsed defensively. Stoke's away record this season is W6 D4 L12, and they're coming to Ashton Gate off the back of a run where they've been cut open repeatedly.

Their top scorer is S. Thomas with 10 goals and 11 assists in 44 appearances, which at least shows there's some creativity in there. M. Manhoef has chipped in with 7 goals. But right now, that attack is not functioning. Three goals in five games tells you everything.

For Bristol City, Scott Twine leads the line with 11 goals and 6 assists in 44 appearances. Emil Riis has 9 in 43. There's enough firepower here to trouble a Stoke defence that is creaking.

Injuries and Head-to-Head

Bristol City are missing Joe Williams, Robert Dickie, and Max Bird, all ruled out for this one. Stoke are without Steven Nzonzi, Sam Gallagher, and Maksym Talovierov. Midfield cover is stretched for both sides, which probably contributes to the open nature you'd expect from this game.

The head-to-head record between these two is genuinely fascinating. Going back to September 2023, Bristol City lost 3-2 at home to Stoke. Then Stoke won 4-0 at their place in May 2024. A 2-2 draw at Stoke followed in October 2024. Bristol City then won 2-0 at home in February 2025. And most recently, back in November 2025, Stoke won 5-1 at home. Five meetings, five different scorelines, a combined total of 20 goals across those fixtures. That is not a record that suggests a cagey 0-0 on a Saturday morning.

The Betting Angle

With both defences leaking, neither team in good form, and a H2H record that looks more like a basketball scoresheet, the obvious lean here is goals. Both Teams to Score has landed in three of the last five H2H meetings. Bristol City have both the home advantage and the better recent form, and with Stoke's defence shipping goals at an alarming rate, Twine and Riis should get opportunities.

The home win appeals on paper, but Hodgson's side have lost six of their last ten at Ashton Gate in the league this season. This is not a fortress. With that in mind, BTTS looks the sharpest call, letting you side-step the match result and back what the data clearly supports: both these teams are going to score.

Both Teams to Score
Odds: 2.06 โ€” PMU (FR)

Three of the last five H2H meetings have seen both sides get on the scoresheet, and the current form of both defences makes a clean sheet from either side look unlikely. Stoke have conceded 11 in five games, Bristol City have shipped 8. Twine and Riis give the hosts the tools to punish them, and Stoke have enough going forward to nick one back.
