Carlisle, Saturday 4th April 2026 | Good / Good To Soft

A solid eight-race card at Carlisle today with the going sitting at Good to Good to Soft, which suits front-runners and horses with proven form on a decent surface. The yard to side with is Olly Murphy, who reads 7/22 over the last 14 days and has Sean Bowen in the saddle for his runners. Rebecca Menzies (0/16) is firmly against on the stats. Three races stand out for punters with something to go at.

1:13 โ€” Feel Good Friday Novices' Handicap Chase (3mยฝf)

Selection: Orkney Blue Each-Way at 6/1 Bet365 / William Hill

Nicky Richards is 3/15 in the last fortnight, not a flying yard but quietly ticking over, and Orkney Blue won over this course and distance on good to soft back in February when returning from a break. That is the line of form that stands up here. The heat stress excuse at his most recent run is credible, it was clearly a rough day for him rather than a decline in ability, and the step back to a track he has already beaten makes this interesting.

Benmore won here last month at 2m5f but stamina at this trip is unproven and a rise from that mark is always an unknown quantity. I Wish You ran well at Wetherby but the Spotlight notes suggest he may prefer softer ground than today's conditions offer, and he is now 7lb higher. Eaton Anne with blinkers on for the first time is "quite interesting" per the Spotlight, and Olly Murphy's yard is in form, but a horse switching headgear on chase debut feels like a project rather than a confident bet. Sean Quinlan rides Orkney Blue and keeps it simple: course form, conditions suit, price is fair.

12:43 โ€” Cumberland Show Maiden Hurdle (2m3ยฝf)

Selection: Tap Tap Shamie at 2/9 (various)

You do not need to overthink this one. Tap Tap Shamie won an Irish point beating a subsequent winner, then fetched ยฃ48,000 at the sales, then finished second in a highly competitive 18-runner Wincanton novice hurdle where the third has since won. Olly Murphy, who is in the form of his life at 7/22 in the last 14 days, saddles him with Sean Bowen up. He steps up in trip here to 2m3ยฝf, which should suit given the staying point background, and the step up from 1m7f at Wincanton to this sort of distance looks a logical move.

The price is 2/9 and short prices are short prices, but this race is weaker than the one he ran at Wincanton, and Dream On Mick is the only other horse here with a profile worth respecting. Dream On Mick won an Irish point over 3m on soft and could be interesting at 7/1 as an each-way outsider on his hurdles debut, but even then this is Tap Tap Shamie's race to lose.

Alternative each-way interest: Dream On Mick Each-Way at 7/1 William Hill. Philip Kirby is 2/16 in the last 14 days but the horse himself is lightly raced and bought for ยฃ42,000 out of a winning Irish point. If the favourite has a bad jumping day, this lad has the profile to collect a place cheque.

1:48 โ€” Bell and Plate Handicap Hurdle (3m1f)

Selection: Ballin Bay Each-Way at 9/1 Bet Victor / talkSPORT BET

This is the most interesting race on the card from a value perspective. Ballin Bay has won his last three races on the bounce, two over 3m3f and one over 3m2f, all at Sedgefield. He has done it with cheekpieces on and looks a horse who has genuinely found his groove. Yes, he is on a career-high mark and running in a handicap hurdle rather than a chase, which was his most recent discipline, but the conditions are fine for him and 9/1 feels generous for a horse in this kind of form.

Rebecca Menzies is 0/16 in 14 days and that is a stat worth respecting in a race this competitive, but Ballin Bay's winning run has momentum behind it, and horses in form going into handicaps at double-figure odds often land them before the handicapper catches up fully.

Jupiter Des Mottes at 5/2 is the obvious market leader but a pulled-up run on his first start for Nicky Richards after being hampered at Haydock does not fill me with confidence at what is a skinny price. Rocheval comes here on decent course form but the Spotlight flags today's drier ground as a concern. Ballin Bay at 9/1 is the value selection in an 11-runner field where three places are on offer.

Today's NAP

Tap Tap Shamie โ€” Cumberland Show Maiden Hurdle (12:43, Carlisle)
Odds: 2/9 โ€” Dragon Bet / BresBet / 7Bet

Olly Murphy is in the form of his life, Sean Bowen takes the ride, and Tap Tap Shamie arrives here as the most progressive horse in the field by a clear margin. Runner-up at Wincanton in a race where the third has since won, he steps up in trip to a distance his point-to-point background suggests he will relish. The opposition here is weak enough that this should be a confident win rather than a short-priced gamble.
