Carlisle stages a seven-race card on good ground, and while it is not the deepest card of the season, there are angles worth taking. The going suits horses with a strong, fluent action, and several of the handicap marks look workable. Paul Midgley has two in the sprint handicap and his yard is in cracking form over the last fortnight, which is the biggest clue on the card. Keep an eye on Wezzeer in the novice stakes too, where Roger Varian’s operation rarely misses when they send one north with a clear intent.

2:00 — British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (5f, Good)

Only four runners but this race shapes up well. Wild Blossom (6/4, Boyle Sports and Betfred) represents Karl Burke, who has four winners from 44 runners over the past two weeks. That is not a yard flying, but Burke knows how to place a two-year-old and James Doyle makes the trip up from the south, which usually means there is something to ride. With no public form, the betting market becomes the form guide here, and Doyle aboard at 6/4 says plenty.

Crownbreaker is the most exposed of the four, having finished third on debut, and that run produced an RPR of 104 which is solid for a first outing at two. Kevin Philippart De Foy has been in excellent nick with five winners from 26 runners over the last 14 days. The 6/5 looks a fair reflection of her ability, but the market has arguably done its job already.

Miss Havisham at 7/2 with Betfred is the value play if you want to oppose the two market principles. Kevin Ryan is a trainer who places his juveniles carefully and Kevin Stott is a reliable northern jockey. Debut run unknown, but the price compensates.

Selection: Wild Blossom at 6/4 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Doyle’s journey north is the angle. Burke will have this filly ready.

2:30 — Racing TV Handicap (5f, Good)

Eleven runners, good ground over five furlongs at Carlisle. The sprint track here rewards horses who travel well from a good draw and hit top gear quickly. Paul Midgley has four winners from 19 runners in the last two weeks. He saddles two here, and that matters.

Fierce Each-Way (10/1, Boyle Sports and Betfred) is the one that catches the eye. Ray Dawson rides, and the last recorded run shows a third, which means he arrives here with recent competitive form. An RPR of 86 and a TS of 77 tells you this is a horse capable of running into a place at minimum on good ground over five furlongs. Midgley trains him, the yard is firing, and 10/1 looks generous for a horse in a hot hand stable.

Speeding Bullet at 12/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is Midgley’s other runner, ridden by David Nolan. Form reading 1422-0 is solid enough, and any bounce back from that last run would put him in contention. The price is bigger than Fierce, reflecting the question mark over that last start, but worth a small each-way interest.

Keldeo at 3/1 is the market leader and Ollie Pears has had a quiet 14 days, going winless from six runners. That is not a yard to be banking short-priced horses from right now. The form 76-514 is patchy. Leave alone at the price.

4:00 — racingtv.com Novice Stakes (7f, Good)

Eleven runners over seven furlongs and this looks a straightforward race on paper, though the 11-runner field opens up each-way possibilities.

Wezzeer (2/1, all three books) is the headline act, trained by Roger Varian with three winners from 17 runners over the past fortnight. Ray Dawson takes the ride. The form reading 31 shows a winner and a third from two starts. That is a horse who knows how to compete and who is clearly improving. Varian sending one to Carlisle for a race like this usually signals confidence. The 2/1 is fair and this should be winning.

Dark Sovereign Each-Way (4/1, Boyle Sports and Betfred) represents Ralph Beckett, who has been in exceptional form with seven winners from 42 runners in the last 14 days. That strike rate is outstanding for a trainer. The form 45- is quiet but this is a yard operating at peak efficiency and Callum Rodriguez is a confident booking. At 4/1 in a race where Wezzeer is odds-on territory in all but name, there is each-way appeal here if Beckett has this one ready to step forward.

Bee Farmer at 8/1 (Boyle Sports) with Edward Bethell training is a longer shot worth noting. Bethell has had a subdued 14 days, one from 25, so the yard is not firing and that tempers enthusiasm significantly. Leave at 8/1.

Selection: Wezzeer at 2/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet). Varian in form, two starts and two competitive finishes, seven furlongs on good ground fits the profile perfectly.
