A decent Saturday card at Cartmel, where good ground is on offer across seven races. The tight, undulating course rewards horses with course experience and riders who know the track. Three races stand out for punters looking for value, including a handicap hurdle with 13 runners that is wide open and an opener where Gordon Elliott’s Irish raider looks the one to beat.

With Glorious Goodwood now just ten days away and thoughts already turning to Sussex, Cartmel offers exactly the kind of grassroots jumping card that serious punters should not overlook. The handicapper occasionally leaves a well-treated horse hiding in plain sight up here, and today is no exception.

2:00 — Hadwins Novices’ Hurdle (2m6f)

Selection: Rebel Tribesman at 7/4 (Boyle Sports, Betfred)

This is a fascinating opener. Newbrook Diamond is the 5/6 favourite carrying the Gordon Elliott colours, and Elliott’s 27% strike rate at Cartmel demands respect. But 5/6 about a horse that has never seen the track before in a novice hurdle is short enough to look elsewhere.

Rebel Tribesman, trained by Jamie Snowden and ridden by Gavin Sheehan, offers the value at 7/4. The form reads /122-1, which means this horse won last time out after a sequence of placed efforts. The pattern is a horse building into its hurdling career, and Snowden has been in decent form with two winners from nine runners in the last 14 days. Sheehan is a polished operator at this level and will not waste the trip.

Viscountess Nelson at 3/1 for Nicky Henderson is interesting. Henderson wins 27% here with an A/E of 1.12, which is genuinely positive, but the form shows a second last time out after a win the run before, and the amateur rider is a significant unknown. Rebel Tribesman to beat the favourite is the call.

3:10 — RF Miller & Co Female Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (2m1f)

An 11-runner handicap hurdle for female and amateur riders, which introduces a jockey quality variable into the equation. The key is finding a horse that will not be undone by the context, and My Chiquita, trained by James Moffatt and ridden by Leah Noreci, tops the official ratings at 127 and arrives here having won last time out.

The form line /22-31 shows a horse that has been knocking on the door repeatedly before getting its head in front. She has handled this trip and this ground before. The 56-day gap since that last win is a consideration, but Moffatt’s horses tend to arrive ready and this mare has done nothing wrong in recent starts.

Ladies Day at 7/2 looks the obvious danger having won her last two. The figures, however, rank her only eighth of eleven, suggesting the handicapper has caught up with her. Eternal Angel at 10/3 is the joint-favourite and has won twice in recent starts, but the two fifths further back hint at inconsistency. My Chiquita at 5/1 is the smarter play on figures and form combined.

With 11 runners and three places at 1/5 odds, there is genuine each-way value here.

Thirteen runners, four places at 1/5 odds, and a wide-open handicap. This is the race of the day.

Caughtinyourtrance, trained by James Moffatt and ridden by Brian Hughes, comes here having won last time out and finished second in both of the two runs before that. The form 3P-221 shows a horse that pulled up at one point but has since found its feet, and the sequence of 221 into a win is exactly the profile you want in a competitive handicap. It has handled today’s trip and going before.

Brian Hughes knows Cartmel intimately. He sits at 15% here overall but on a volume of 549 rides, that is a reliable strike rate. The A/E of 0.86 suggests he does not get the fancied rides every time, which means when he is on a horse with genuine claims, he is worth following.

High Dancer at 4/1 is the market leader having won last time out for Nicky Richards. Richards fires at 18% at Cartmel and Danny McMenamin is a solid partner, but the comment suggests modest rating support and it is not easy to enthuse at a price barely bigger than the favourite’s. Tommie Beau at 6/1 is interesting after a recent win and second, and the rating places it third of 13. Homme Public at 9/1 for the Greenall and Guerriero yard is worth noting as a threat, given that partnership posts an A/E of 1.55 at Cartmel, the best in the trainer stats. But Homme Public pulled up two runs back, has a 63-day absence, and is still winless in this recent sequence.

Caughtinyourtrance is the most consistent horse in the field right now. Back it each-way in a 13-runner heat with four places on offer.
