Catterick, Saturday 30 May 2026 — Tips & Preview
Good ground at Catterick on a cloudy Saturday afternoon. Seven races on the card and three worth breaking down in detail. This is a track that rewards course specialists and horses proven on a turning, undulating layout, so the form book has extra relevance here. Let us get into it.
1:55 — Pennine Brewing Company Novice Stakes (5f, Good)
Selection: Skip To Victory — 10/11 Boyle Sports / Betfred
This is a thin novice, and the market has it about right, but Skip To Victory is the horse to be on. Three runs at Southwell over 5f, all consistent, and she was beaten by a head in February at a track where results can flatter. This is a turf debut and she is a half-sister to a Listed turf winner, so the breeding strongly suggests she will take to the surface. Trainer Dylan Cunha has a small but active yard and the horse arrives fresh enough.
Stoneacre Joe at 7/4 is the clear main rival. His Haydock run on soft ground last week can be forgiven entirely. Both his prior starts were on good to firm, both resulted in placed efforts, and he is a speedy sort who will handle this trip well. The issue is he starts favourite on the basis of form that may be flattered by the softer surface at Haydock. At 7/4, the value is not compelling.
Skip To Victory at odds-on is not a bet for the heart, but she is the most likely winner. Back her and move on.
2:58 — Download The Raceday Ready App Maiden Stakes (7f, Good)
Selection: Two Commanders Each-Way — 5/1 Boyle Sports / Betfred
The form horse here is Mr Writer, trained by James Fanshawe, who carries a 27% win record at Catterick and rides Daniel Muscutt who converts at 29% here. On bare form, Mr Writer sets the standard from a handicap mark of 77, and the Fanshawe-Muscutt combination on this track is a genuine positive. He will likely win this if running to his best.
However, the each-way angle at 5/1 belongs to Two Commanders, the Edward Bethell newcomer ridden by Oisin McSweeney. Bethell hits at 24% at Catterick. McSweeney’s A/E of 1.84 here is exceptional, meaning he genuinely outperforms his market position on this track. The horse is a half-brother to four winners up to a mile and two furlongs, out of a 5f Listed winner. That is a proper pedigree for a 7f turf maiden. Debutants by Bethell are regularly well-prepared and the market will tell you plenty, but at 5/1 this morning, there is clear each-way appeal in a small six-runner field that still pays two places.
Grasmere Boy at 9/4 ran a creditable debut at Newcastle and should improve for this turf outing. He is a legitimate each-way danger for Mr Writer at the top of the market. But Two Commanders at 5/1 with a strong trainer-jockey course combination is the value play in the race.
4:12 — Ann Whitehouse Memorial Veterans’ Handicap (6f, Good)
Selection: Evocative Spark — 9/4 Boyle Sports / Betfred
John David Riches has a staggering A/E of 1.53 at Catterick, which is the most underrated stat on today’s card. His yard fires horses here and they consistently outrun their odds. Evocative Spark has won three of four turf starts this season, with two of those wins coming over 7f at Catterick and the most recent a course-and-distance success over today’s 6f trip. He is up 4lb for that last win but the Spotlight notes he had more in hand than the winning margin suggested.
The concern is the 4lb rise, but this is a horse in the form of his life on a track he loves. Luke Morris rides and while his overall A/E here is only 0.98, this is a horse doing the heavy lifting.
Good Earth at 2/1 is a formidable rival and has won over course and distance. He has gone up 6lb for his Haydock win and at 99 career starts he knows his job. Daniel Muscutt’s 29% strike rate here makes him a serious threat. But at 2/1 versus 9/4 for a horse in three-from-four form on the same course, Evocative Spark represents the better risk-reward.
Wen Moon at 10/3 is worth noting as a place option, having been placed here over 5f previously and shaped better at Carlisle last time out. A place each-way is not a bad thought at those odds, but the win vote goes firmly to Evocative Spark.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 9/4 — Boyle Sports (others: 9/4 Betfred, 9/4 LiveScore Bet)
Three wins from four turf starts this season, two of them at Catterick over 7f and a course-and-distance win last time out. John David Riches carries an A/E of 1.53 at this track, meaning his runners consistently outperform their market prices. The 4lb rise is the only caveat, but a horse this in form, this suited to the course and going, on a yard that thrives here, is exactly the kind of profile BonusDevil was built to back.
