Catterick, Monday 17 August 2026 — Tips & Preview

The eve of the York Ebor Festival and the serious money is already heading north to the Knavesmire. That leaves Catterick with a competitive Monday card and some proper handicap betting heat across the six races. Going is good, fields are healthy, and there are angles worth exploiting for those who look beyond the obvious. Three races stand out.

3:45 — Constant Security Services Novice Stakes (5f, Good)

Six runners, a shortish field, and the market has made its mind up pretty clearly. Night Shining (George Boughey) is odds-on at 4/7, which reflects the trainer’s current form. Boughey has sent out 4 winners from 20 runners in the last 14 days, and his 18% course strike rate at Catterick is backed by solid A/E numbers. Pat Cosgrave takes the ride on a filly who has been knocking around the placed positions consistently enough.

The value play is Preferred at 7/2 with Boyle Sports or Betfred. James Tate has a 24% win rate at Catterick from 33 runners, the best of any trainer on this card, and his 3 winners from 12 runners in the last 14 days shows the yard is ticking over nicely. P J McDonald is a quality booking. The form reads 4-3 which is light on runs but respectable, and at 7/2 against an odds-on shot in a six-runner field, this is where the value sits. Small field, no each-way play warranted.

Selection: Preferred (7/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

4:15 — racingtv.com Handicap Stakes (5f, Good)

Eleven runners over five furlongs on good ground. This is a proper betting race and the form book gives you plenty to chew on.

Staniel Cay Each-Way catches the eye despite the 96-day break. Oisin Orr takes the ride, and that booking matters here. Orr has a 17% strike rate at Catterick from 77 rides with an A/E of 1.05, meaning he performs to his market position consistently at this track. The three-year-old won two starts back and shaped with promise last time, finishing third. He has the trip and going ticked. The price of 11/2 with Boyle Sports or Betfred drifts to 5/1 at LiveScore Bet, so go with the 11/2. With 11 runners and three places paid at 1/5 odds, there is a solid each-way case here.

Betweenthesticks at 8/1 with Boyle Sports is also worth a mention. Ruth Carr has sent out 4 winners from 25 runners in the last 14 days, a decent clip for a northern yard. The gelding has finished second and third in recent starts, handles today’s trip and ground, and the 8/1 from stall 7 is workable each-way in a big field. But Staniel Cay is the primary selection.

Selection: Staniel Cay (11/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred) Each-Way

4:45 — Racing Again 26th August Handicap Stakes (7f, Good)

Ten runners over seven furlongs and this one is loaded with interest. The data points firmly at two horses.

Black Storm Each-Way is the pick at 9/2 with Boyle Sports or Betfred, with LiveScore Bet going even shorter at 7/2. The ratings have him as the top horse in the field. He has been relentlessly consistent, third last time out and third two starts back, and he handles this trip and going without any question. Stall two is a gift over seven furlongs at Catterick. Oisin Orr rides again, which adds another layer of confidence given his Catterick record. Katie Scott’s 0-from-13 recent run is the one thing that gives you pause, but her overall 17% Catterick win rate and A/E of 1.38 shows she gets her horses running here when they are ready.

At 9/2, with ten runners paying three places at 1/5, this is a prime each-way race. Black Storm looks the class act in this field and should at minimum hit the frame.

Classy Clarets at 7/2 is worth noting. Four wins on the spin is a serious sequence but he is ranked near the bottom on ratings and carries 139lbs, so he is running off a mark that may not reflect his current form. If you want a win-only alternative he is solid, but Black Storm is the selection.

Selection: Black Storm (9/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred) Each-Way

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksBlack Storm — Racing Again 26th August Handicap Stakes (4:45, Catterick)
Odds: 9/2 — Boyle Sports (others: 9/2 Betfred, 7/2 LiveScore Bet)

Top-rated horse in the field on a trip and going he handles well, drawn in stall two at a track where that is a clear advantage over seven furlongs. Oisin Orr has a 17% win rate at Catterick and an A/E of 1.05, meaning you are getting fair value for the market position. Katie Scott’s overall Catterick A/E of 1.38 tells you her horses run above their price when she turns up here. Black Storm has been knocking on the door and today’s setup, class edge on ratings, low draw, proven ground, gives him every reason to finally convert.
