Catterick, Wednesday 8 July 2026: Tips & Best Bets

Catterick serves up a six-race card on good-to-firm ground under mostly sunny skies, and there is enough meat on the bone across three featured races to find some genuine value. The tight, undulating track rewards horses that travel well and jockeys who know their way around, so course stats matter here. Daniel Tudhope and Sean Kirrane are two names worth following at this venue, and James Owen is clearly the trainer in sharpest form with his Catterick string right now.

3:00 Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes (5f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Warby (5/2, Betfred)

This is a small-field novice with limited exposed form across the board, so the market is doing its best to make sense of incomplete pictures. Big Hitter is the odds-on favourite off two placed efforts, but twice running into defeat at short prices raises a question about whether she actually wins when it matters. Tim Easterby’s yard has been firing with 14 winners from 112 runners in the last 14 days, and David Allan knows Catterick well. Warby showed ability on debut with a second-place finish and represents a yard that clearly has its horses in good order right now. At 5/2 with Betfred, she represents far better value than the jolly and gets the nod in what is admittedly an open heat.

Adrian Paul Keatley is worth a mention as a trainer with a 19% course record and an A/E of 1.29 at Catterick, but Angel In My Heart is a debutante at 16/1 and that is a step too far without form to anchor it.

3:30 All Races Live On Racing TV Handicap (7f, Good To Firm, 10 runners)

Selection: Starryfield Each-Way (4/1, Boyle Sports)

This ten-runner handicap is the most competitive race on the card and also the one with the most interesting trainer angle. James Owen saddles Starryfield with Oisin Orr in the plate, and that combination demands attention. Owen operates at a 26% strike rate at Catterick with an A/E of 1.17, the standout trainer stat on the card. Orr himself hits at 17% at this course with a positive A/E of 1.07. When your trainer and jockey both arrive with course-specific profiles that beat expectation, you pay attention.

Starryfield has been consistently competitive, placing third last time and hitting the frame on several occasions before that. Today’s trip and going are both proven, and the form reads as the most solid in the race. The one query is a 62-day absence, but Owen’s horses clearly arrive fit given his recent record, and the yard does not fire in a horse unless it is ready. At 4/1 with Boyle Sports or 9/2 with Betfred, this represents a fair each-way price in a 10-runner handicap paying three places at 1/5 odds.

Masaban at 11/4 is the market leader and has form at the trip, but his finishing positions have edged the wrong way over the last two outings since his win. Beyond The Bar is intriguing on our figures and is beginning to run better again, but the price of 7/1 reflects a frustrating profile. Starryfield is the clear pick.

4:30 Racing Again 15th July Fillies’ Handicap (7f, Good To Firm, 6 runners)

Selection: Velvet Rhythm (2/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Charlie Johnston’s filly has won three of her last five starts, including last time out, and comes back quickly on a 16-day turnaround, which speaks to her wellbeing. Both today’s trip and going are proven, and the progressive profile here is hard to ignore. The only blemish in the recent run of form was a below-par eighth two starts back, but she bounced straight back to win next time. Johnston hits at 16% at Catterick with an A/E of 1.08, and Rowan Scott has ridden here regularly enough to know his way around.

Donna Nook at 7/2 is the main danger. She won two starts ago, is proven at the trip and going, and the first-time tongue-tie plus visor combination is the kind of equipment change that can sharpen a filly up. David O’Meara has 7 winners from 61 runners over the last fortnight, which is a reasonable clip. She could easily finish second here, but Velvet Rhythm’s recent form is more consistently strong and the 2/1 is a workable price for a horse that is clearly progressive.

Only Dream Big at 5/2 carries consecutive wins but the comment around modest finishing figures compared to the rest of this field is a concern. Rogue Citation’s 84-day absence and poor last run make it hard to back her at 11/2, however proven she looks at the trip and going on paper.

Jockey silksVelvet Rhythm โ€” Racing Again 15th July Fillies’ Handicap (4:30, Catterick)
Odds: 2/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 2/1 Betfred, 2/1 LiveScore Bet)

Three wins from her last five starts, the most recent of them last time out, with trip and going both proven. Charlie Johnston returns her quickly, which is always a sign of confidence, and her form profile is the most consistent in a race that has a couple of unexplained question marks over most of the others. At evens in real terms, 2/1 in a fillies’ handicap where the progressive filly is clearly on the upgrade is the bet of the day.
