Chelmsford (AW) — Thursday 2nd April 2026

📅 2 April 2026 Horse Racing

Chelmsford (AW) — Thursday 2nd April 2026

A seven-race card on the Chelmsford Polytrack under standard conditions. No excuses for any runner on the going front — the surface rides consistently and rewards horses who act on it. Three races stand out from a punting perspective, and there's a solid each-way case in the mile maiden. Robert Cowell's yard is ticking over at 1/5 over the last fortnight — not exceptional, but worth noting he saddles two in the opener. John Butler's barn is the one to watch today: 5/17 in the last 14 days is a serious strike rate and he has a runner in the 2:52 worth following.

2:22 — Oliver And Elsie Special Handicap (5f, Class 5, 7 runners)

A tight five-furlong sprint handicap. Diomed Spirit holds the highest RPR in the field at 98 but his recent form reads 15-355 and Stuart Williams' yard is winless in six over the past fortnight — hard to get excited. Richard Hughes is struggling badly at 1/17 in the last 14 days so Nogo's Dream is easily swerved despite Billy Loughnane in the saddle.

The selection is Almaty Star (Jack Mitchell, Robert Cowell). His form figures of 34-242 are those of a horse consistently knocking on the door without winning, but look at what he's doing: placing consistently, carrying weight well, and working on a track and surface he clearly handles. Cowell's yard is active and returning winners — the second-string label here is misleading because Mitchell is a quality booking at this level. At 129lbs he's well treated relative to his RPR of 95, and the TS of 91 is actually the highest speed figure in the race on recent evidence. On a surface that rewards rhythm and jumping cleanly out of the gates, Almaty Star profiles as a horse whose consistency is about to be rewarded.

  • Selection: Almaty Star (Jack Mitchell)
  • Angle: Cowell yard firing, highest recent TS in field, consistent placed form on AW

2:52 — Easter Leather Anniversary Cup Maiden Stakes (1m, 13 runners)

Thirteen runners in a maiden is a lottery if you're not selective. But one angle sticks out like a sore thumb: John Butler at 5/17 in the last 14 days. That's a trainer operating at nearly 30% and you do not ignore that in a maiden where the bare form of most runners is thin.

Mr Maxim Each-Way (Darragh Keenan, John Butler) has shown just a single run (7th) so the form book offers little to grip. But that's irrelevant. Butler's yard is red-hot, Keenan is a competent claimer who rides regularly for the stable, and in a 13-runner field on a mile trip over the Chelmsford Polytrack, this is exactly the kind of unknown commodity that lands at a big price. The horse is unexposed, the trainer is in the form of his life, and the each-way terms in a 13-runner field (four places at most books) make this a cracking speculative punt.

If you want the more form-backed option: Decem Starr (Kieran Shoemark, Jack Jones) has form figures of 025 and an RPR of 69 — comfortably the highest in the field among the three-year-olds with a race record. Shoemark is a Group-level jockey riding a maiden at Chelmsford for a reason. He's probably the one most punters will back, but the price will reflect that.

  • Selection: Mr Maxim each-way (Darragh Keenan)
  • Angle: Butler yard at 5/17 in 14 days, unexposed, big field, each-way terms generous
  • Alternative: Decem Starr (Kieran Shoemark) — best form in field, but likely shorter price

3:52 — Austin Super Handicap (7f, 5 runners)

Small field, but this is the most compelling race on the card from a form perspective. Five runners over seven furlongs — no each-way here, this is win-or-bust punting territory.

Champion Again Ole (Callum Rodriguez, Roger Varian) is the standout. Form reading 3261-1 tells the story immediately — this horse won last time out, and Roger Varian's yard is ticking at 1/5 recently which at least shows the horses are in reasonable order. The horse is a four-year-old lightly raced at the top level who has clearly progressed through the winter. An RPR of 94 on 132lbs is workable in this company, and Rodriguez is a jockey who rides Chelmsford regularly and knows the Polytrack's demands. The concern is the top-weight penalty after winning — handicappers can be brutal — but in a five-runner field where the alternatives include a nine-year-old in mixed form (Tiger Crusade) and Stuart Williams still cold at 0/5, the Varian horse deserves favouritism.

The danger is Shimmering Spin (Alexandra Egan, Jane Chapple-Hyam) — highest RPR in the field at 97 and form of 18356, which includes a win. But 0/2 for the yard recently and a 7lb claimer up against seasoned jockeys in a small field makes this a harder sell.

  • Selection: Champion Again Ole (Callum Rodriguez)
  • Angle: Won last time out, Varian yard active, small field suits, Rodriguez AW specialist

Today's NAP

Champion Again Ole — Austin Super Handicap (3:52, Chelmsford)
Odds: Check Paddy Power/Betfair Sportsbook for best available — likely 6/4 to 2/1 range given field size

Won last time out, form reads 3261-1 and the form is improving in the right direction. Roger Varian doesn't send horses to Chelmsford to fill places, and with only five runners to beat, Champion Again Ole faces his easiest task on paper. The nine-year-old Tiger Crusade is the obvious threat but his 518266 form is going the wrong way. Back the Varian horse to follow up — standard AW conditions suit, and Callum Rodriguez knows how to deliver on this circuit.
