A modest Friday card at Chepstow but there are genuine angles across all three featured races. The Good To Firm ground suits horses with speed and a clean action, and the going is likely to ride quick on the straight five-furlong track. Ralph Beckett (23% course wins), Rossa Ryan (21%), and the Muir/Grassick yard (22%) all carry strong Chepstow profiles worth noting when their names appear.

3:00 — Bill Lewtons 80th Birthday Novice Stakes (1m2f)

Selection: Alfaraz (8/11 Boyle Sports)

Andrew Balding sends over Alfaraz with a first-time hood, and the visual might just unlock what this colt clearly has. He ran a solid race at Newbury last month, finishing sixth of ten in a novice that has subsequently thrown up good form, but the issue was plain to see: he raced too freely in front and burned himself out. The hood is a significant tactical move from Balding, and if David Probert can slot him in behind the pace and get him to switch off, his RPR of 93 makes him well above the class required here.

Echo Of Stars at 3/1 is the main danger. Jamie Spencer rides, and with a 20% course strike rate he cannot be ignored. The first-time tongue-tie is interesting and his Newbury run was better than it looked at fourth. But Alfaraz has more raw ability and the market price reflects the fact this is his race to lose rather than win.

El Nay at 4/1 keeps running into things without winning, which is a worry. Blue Hercules showed improvement last time at 8/1 and will fill a place, but the winner ought to come from the top two in the market.

Five runners, so each-way is technically two places here, and So Smart at 9/2 looks the value in a race where the market leader carries a concern.

Cayman Tai is the odds-on favourite at 11/10 and won well at Southwell last week, but he arrives carrying a 5lb penalty, meaning he is effectively running off a mark 4lb above his current official rating. The Spotlight says it clearly: he looks ahead of the handicapper on those terms. On quick turf at Chepstow, that is a meaningful ask.

So Smart ran third over this exact course and distance eight days ago on ground softer than today’s. The step up to Good To Firm should suit, Ashley Lewis claims a useful 5lb bringing his weight down to 122lbs, and he is a pound lower in the weights than that recent effort. Grace Harris has had a quiet fortnight with just the one winner from seventeen runners, but this horse is in good nick and the course form is there.

Over Spiced won at Bath this month over 5f on Good going and clearly handles quick conditions, but she managed only fifth on her next two runs after that win, suggesting the handicapper has her measure at this level.

Food For Thought is the 4/5 favourite and she is clearly a filly with ability, but the drop from a mile to seven furlongs is not an obvious move according to her Spotlight, and her Irish Oaks entry suggests connections have middle-distance ambitions rather than a sprint pedigree. Ralph Beckett runs Rossa Ryan, both carrying strong Chepstow form, but the trip shortening is a legitimate question mark against her at a short price.

Quisana is the play. Eve Johnson Houghton has a 19% win rate at this course, and on her only start at Windsor over a mile eleven days ago she ran green but kept on for fourth, beating her opening odds of 40/1 quite convincingly in terms of effort. She shapes like a filly who will appreciate the experience, and if this shorter trip suits her action better than the mile, she could outrun her price considerably. The pedigree is well-connected from an unraced dam and Johnson Houghton clearly thinks she has ability.

Guitar Solo at 4/1 led the field at Newbury over 7f recently and ran a proper race in a competitive heat. She has course-relevant form and Sean Levey is a capable pilot. She is the main threat and worth siding with each-way if you prefer.

Ingemar is an interesting newcomer from Brian Meehan (15% course wins, A/E 1.05). Half-brother to the Group 3 winner Indian Blessing, he could easily outrun 11/2 on debut if the yard fancies him, and the market move from his morning price will tell plenty.
