A six-race card at Chepstow on good to firm ground, and while this is no Festival, there are three races worth picking apart properly. The going suits sharp, well-held horses and punishes anything that needs give underfoot. Taylor Fisher and Joe Leavy are two jockeys worth noting on this track, with both posting above-par A/E figures at Chepstow. Christopher Mason’s yard is also quietly in form, going 2/7 in the last 14 days. Keep those names in mind as we work through the card.

2:06 — Apprentice Handicap Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

This apprentice handicap is thin on quality but there is one horse that stands out from a pace-figure angle. Arnaz Each-Way (10/1, Boyle Sports and Betfred) catches the eye as the top-rated horse in the race on speed figures, clocking a 68 that nothing else here can match. Mark Loughnane’s stable has gone 2/18 over the last fortnight, which is not spectacular, but the horse arrives on a compact eight-day turnaround showing the yard is happy to fire him in when ready. Jockey Hope Regan claims 7lbs, softening the 132lb burden meaningfully. Yes, he is winless in six, but the form figures of 607878 hide the fact that those eights came in better company. Drop him into this band and the figures say he belongs at the head of affairs on merit. At 10/1 in a field of eight, three places at 1/5 odds makes this a worthwhile each-way investment.

Be An Angel is the obvious danger at 7/2. She won three starts back and filled the frame next time out, and Jake Dickson knows how to ride a front-runner around here. The topweight burden of 135lbs is a concern, but if she gets an easy lead on this fast ground she could be hard to stop. She is the value-for-money win alternative if you want a more straightforward bet.

3:16 — EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

A 10-runner juvenile maiden and the market has already made its mind up to a degree, with Romidijo at 2/1 and Global Success at 6/4. Neither price excites me enough to pile in, but there is a case to make for the favourite on balance.

Global Success (6/4, Boyle Sports and Betfred) with Taylor Fisher in the saddle is the most straightforward call. Fisher posts an A/E of 1.23 at Chepstow from 67 rides, meaning she consistently punches above market weight at this track. The filly’s form reads 56325, a consistent pattern that points to a horse finding its level and ready to break through. Trainer J S Moore has gone 1/11 in the last 14 days, so the yard is not in the hottest vein, but this filly has earned the right to go off favourite and Fisher on a course she handles well is a decent combination. The price is short but the logic is sound.

If you want to oppose the market, Romidijo at 2/1 is the chief threat. Charlie Clover has gone 1/5 recently, a strong recent strike rate for a smaller operation, and Pierre-Louis Jamin is a competent rider in this grade. The form of 830422 is a step in the right direction even if the win has not come yet.

Pride Of Nepal Each-Way (9/1, Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet) is the one that grabs the attention at the price. The form figures of 711117 tell most of the story: three consecutive wins heading into this, then a seventh most recently that reads like a blow-out after a hard campaign rather than a genuine decline in ability. Tony Carroll’s yard has posted 6/49 over the last 14 days, a respectable enough strike rate for a volume operation. Donagh Murphy claims 7lbs, taking the effective weight right down from the stated 135lbs, and stall two on a straight track on good to firm ground is an ideal draw. If that seventh last time out was simply a case of him running flat after his hat-trick, he is a prime bounce-back candidate at a very workable price. With only two places on offer in a six-runner race the each-way terms are limited, but win-to-place ratio at 9/1 still makes it attractive.

The market points firmly to Crimson Road at 11/8 as the one to beat, and the data backs that up. John and Rhys Flint post a 16% win rate at Chepstow with an A/E of 1.57, the best figure among any trainer on this card today. He bounced back to winning form last time out and the ratings suggest he sets the standard. The concern is the yard has gone 0/6 in the last 14 days, a cold recent spell that may or may not be significant. At 11/8 you are paying for a horse that looked like the banker and whose trainer is currently out of form. That is not the recipe for value.
