Chester, Saturday 30 May: Tips and Best Bets

Good ground at Chester on a partly cloudy Saturday, and the tight Roodee circuit rewards horses that travel well in the pack and don’t want miles of room to stretch out. Three races stand out today, each with a clear angle worth following. The card also offers a reminder that Chester is very much a course-specialist track for trainers: Andrew Balding (21% here), Hugo Palmer (17%), and Roger Varian (20%) all know how to place a horse around these bends. Keep an eye on their runners.

1:50 โ€” British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (6f)

Pure Grit (5/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the clear pick here and represents a straightforward case. Andrew Balding saddles this Pinatubo colt fresh off a Newbury second over the same trip on good ground fifteen days ago, where he made most of the running and only got caught late. Balding strikes at 21% at Chester and is currently sending out seven winners from 49 runners in the last two weeks nationally. The yard is very much in form. The key question with Pure Grit is whether he adapts to the Chester track, but a horse that travels keenly and leads from low draws is exactly the profile that suits here. Oisin Murphy takes the ride, which also speaks volumes.

Caturra Lights (15/2) is the main danger. Two thirds at Musselburgh and Chester respectively represent solid juvenile form, and the Chester run in particular is worth highlighting. But at less than half the price of our selection, there is little incentive to take the shorter odds when Pure Grit has the better profile and more upside if connections have always targeted this race.

Blake’s Monarch (10/1) caught the eye on debut at Wolverhampton, leading until the final stride before being short-headed. Low draw helps and the form is franked, but this is a tougher ask on turf against a more experienced field.

Selection: Pure Grit at 5/4 (Boyle Sports / Betfred). Short enough that each-way is not the play here.

2:20 โ€” Kingkabs Selling Stakes (6f)

Everatease (11/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred) has done nothing but improve through three runs in 5f maidens, and every piece of the Spotlight analysis points in the same direction: he is crying out for 6f. Eve Johnson Houghton is 4/35 in the last 14 days, not spectacular but operational, and the key detail is that his RPR has climbed with each outing. The step up in trip drops him into selling grade, which is the other part of the equation. Good ground suits him fine, and while the draw is not referenced as a problem, he is positioned low enough not to cause concern.

Furturra (5/2) finished a clear second at Musselburgh nine days ago under Tim Easterby’s care, and Oisin Murphy’s booking is always a flag worth raising. Untried at 6f is the only knock, but he comes out of that Musselburgh form looking sharp. If you want the Murphy angle, he is a legitimate each-way alternative at the price.

Undercover Affair (3/1) has raced here before and ranks highly on RPR, but stall 10 in a 12-runner field at Chester is a meaningful disadvantage and he has never encountered ground slower than good. The market suggests he ought to be favourite, but the draw tempers that view considerably.

Selection: Everatease at 11/4 (Boyle Sports / Betfred). Trip upgrade in a weaker race is a combination that works.

3:30 โ€” Virgin Bet Handicap (7f, 13 runners)

Supido (15/8, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the form pick and deserves the short price. He won over 7.6f at Chester just 24 days ago, is well drawn again, and a 4lb rise is entirely manageable for a horse that has clearly rediscovered his enthusiasm after a flat three-year-old campaign. Finished fifth in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last year on good to firm ground, so good ground today holds no fears. The only flag here is whether Ian Williams’ yard (2/32 nationally in 14 days) is firing at full capacity, but with Supido it is the horse rather than the trainer stat that sells the case. He is in his right race at his right course.

Palmar Bay Each-Way (5/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the each-way interest in this 13-runner handicap. He won a Chester handicap last summer off a 12lb lower mark, so course form is there. Ralph Beckett hits at 18% at this track, and a close fourth in a Wolverhampton Listed race in March tells you this horse is still running to a high level even if his recent form reads a little flat. Off a stiff mark now, but four places paid at 1/5 in a 13-runner field makes him worth including each-way at 5/1.

Roman Dragon (13/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred) won here over 5f at the May meeting and Hugo Palmer knows Chester better than most (17%, A/E 1.17). The problem is the Spotlight flag about staying 7f and being rarely seen at the trip. Oisin Murphy keeps the ride, which is a plus, but the trip reservation is genuine. Each-way at most.

Selection: Supido at 15/8 (Boyle Sports / Betfred). Each-way play on Palmar Bay at 5/1 is the saver in this field.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksSupido โ€” Virgin Bet Handicap (3:30, Chester)
Odds: 15/8 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 15/8 Betfred, 2/1 LiveScore Bet)

Chester specialist. Won over course and distance 24 days ago, is drawn well again, and a 4lb penalty for that win is a fair price to pay for a horse that reached fifth in the Britannia Stakes at Ascot last year. Good ground is his ground, and the form from earlier in the month stacks up well against the field. Back-to-back Chester wins is a realistic outcome here, and at 15/8 you are getting a properly handicapped horse with a course edge, not just a market mover.
