The tight, turning track rewards horses that handle the unique demands here, and trainer stats matter more at this venue than almost anywhere else on the Flat calendar. The headline race on the card is a tough Listed heat at seven furlongs, and the form picks itself if you filter through the noise. Magic Basma (7/2, Boyle Sports & Betfred) is the selection. Kevin Ryan’s four-year-old finished second in a Listed event at Musselburgh last time over this exact trip, and the comment that she did so without a clear run makes this one of the more compelling angles on the card. The market leader Copacabana Sands (9/4) is hard to trust after being eased beaten seven lengths at Lingfield, even if Andrew Balding’s strong Chester record is a factor. Circe won a Listed race at Musselburgh last time and acts at this trip, making her the main danger at 3/1, but at a shorter price than Magic Basma with a comparable profile, the value sits with Ryan’s mare.

Bellarchi at 13/2 is interesting after a four-and-a-quarter-length Musselburgh handicap win, and Joanna Mason rides well at Chester (16% strike rate), but the step up into Listed company after a 37-day break is enough to leave her as a saver at best. Dash Of Azure with Greatrex up catches the eye at 15/2 given that jockey’s Chester record and the suggestion her figures rate her well, but the Group 2 hiding at Ascot last time needs explaining first.

Do Bronxs Each-Way (6/1, Boyle Sports & Betfred) is the value play in this seven-furlong handicap. David Loughnane’s three-year-old was beaten only a length and a half at this exact course last time off today’s mark, and Chester clearly suits his style. The figures rate him highest in the field, and David Egan takes the ride. That Chester form line is the key: he has already shown he can handle the track and go close at this level. The frustrating habit of not winning recently is the one caveat, but at 6/1 each-way in a ten-runner handicap, the case stacks up.

Start Me Up (7/2, Boyle Sports & Betfred) is the obvious market rival. Richard Spencer’s gelding won a handicap here last time by three-quarters of a length, confirming the Chester affinity, and arrives with first-time cheekpieces applied and a trainer posting a 5/19 record in the last fortnight. The weight rise is the concern, and at 7/2 there is less room for error. He could easily win, but Do Bronxs offers more at the price.

Bright Summer (6/1) carries the Andrew Balding/Chester connection, but that ten-length defeat at Salisbury last time leaves too many questions. First Time at 8/1 is worth a mention if the Fahey yard fires, but the York run was modest enough to keep him onside rather than backed.

Winged One Each-Way (8/1, Boyle Sports) is the selection here and possibly the best-value bet on the card. Andrew Balding’s three-year-old finished runner-up at this very course last time in a performance that suggested more to come. The figures rate her comfortably clear at the head of this field. Balding’s Chester record (21% wins, A/E 1.09) is among the strongest in training at this venue. First-time cheekpieces go on, which often sparks improvement rather than masks it when a horse has already shown ability, and Jason Watson (15% Chester strike rate) partners her. The 8/1 available at Boyle Sports looks generous against everything pointing in her direction.

City Queen (13/8 favourite) has a progressive profile and won last time, but stepping beyond her proven trip to ten furlongs introduces real uncertainty. Backed short, she has to prove she gets this distance first. Hoseki (10/3) won her maiden last time and is bred for this trip, with Haggas (22% Chester strike rate) saddling, but a handicap debut off a maiden win is always a step into the unknown. Patagonia Girl (15/2) has course form and won here two starts back, with David Probert (solid Chester handler) aboard. She is the main each-way danger to Winged One.
