A sunny, warm afternoon at Chester on good ground, and the tight Roodee circuit throws up its usual collection of puzzles. Three races to focus on today, with a mix of handicap intrigue and maiden market dissection. Chester rewards course-savvy trainers and jockeys who know how to position around that unique left-handed loop, so the stats matter here more than at most tracks.

7:00 — ESL Export Handicap (1m2f½f)

Selection: Gonna Fly (2/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Ralph Beckett saddles this three-year-old off the back of a last-time-out win, and the trainer’s 18% strike rate at Chester is worth respecting. Beckett has been firing in decent form over the past fortnight with eight wins from 48 runners, and Rossa Ryan is a polished partner for a horse that needs to travel well in the early stages on this sharp track.

The form is straightforward: win, poor run, win. That middle effort over a different trip and possibly different conditions can be set aside, and the bookmakers have priced this accordingly at 2/1. Good ground and today’s trip are both already proven in the book. At a shade of odds-on with both wins bracketing that blip, the market has this right.

The one thing keeping Infraad honest is that progressive profile, but a 72-day absence for a lightly raced three-year-old with William Haggas is not automatically a negative, and Harry Davies is a Chester specialist with a 16% course record. That said, you never really know where they are until the stalls open after that length of time off. Gonna Fly is already proven fit and in form. Take the 2/1.

Selection: Regency Royal Each-Way (5/1, Boyle Sports — 9/2 Betfred, 9/2 LiveScore Bet)

A 13-runner juvenile sprint and the market is dominated by Eighth Immortal at 5/4, who ran a promising second on debut. But 5/4 for a horse who has run once in a 13-runner field on a track that can be unforgiving for inexperienced runners asks a lot of faith.

Andrew Balding’s Regency Royal is the more interesting each-way proposition at 5/1 with Boyle Sports. Balding is the standout trainer at this track statistically, posting a 21% strike rate at Chester and crucially an A/E of 1.08, meaning his runners genuinely outperform their market prices here. That is a meaningful edge over the course. P J McDonald takes the ride and knows Chester well.

With 13 runners paying three places, there is genuine each-way value at 5/1 in a race where the favourite is untested over six furlongs and many of these have minimal or no form at all. Balding picking this specific race for this specific horse on a track where he overperforms is a signal worth backing.

5:50 — Moxy Chester EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (1m2½f)

Selection: Summerson (10/3, all firms)

Four runners, and the market has Crownright as a short-priced favourite at 1/2. Ralph Beckett’s filly has placed four times without winning, and that form has been franked, but at odds-on in a four-runner maiden she is not the bet.

Roger Varian’s Summerson is the play at 10/3. Varian runs at a 20% strike rate at Chester, and his yard has been in serious form lately with 11 wins from 35 runners over the past fortnight. That is a yard absolutely firing at the moment. Summerson ran second on her only start, which is exactly the profile you want coming into a maiden like this: experience banked, a placed effort to her name, and a trainer whose horses arrive fit and ready.

The trip of 1m2½f at Chester is a stiff test that can catch out horses making their debut, and Crownfast has shown a tendency to place rather than win. Rowan Scott takes the ride for Varian, and at nearly 4/1 against a short-priced favourite with a losing habit, this is where the value sits.
