Chester is one of the most unique tracks in Britain. The tight, left-handed circuit with its short straight puts a premium on horses that settle well and jockeys who know when to commit. With good ground and light rain forecast, conditions today are close to ideal for horses proven on a sound surface. Three races stand out on this eight-race card, and there is a compelling case to be made at prices well above the favourite in each.

Worth noting before we get into it: Andrew Balding runs at Chester with an A/E of 1.07 over 633 runners, which tells you the yard targets the track seriously. Ralph Beckett’s 18% record is offset slightly by an A/E of 0.90, suggesting his runners here are sometimes sent off a touch short. William Haggas at 22% is the standout name, and Harry Davies as his regular pilot holds a 17% course record with a strong A/E of 1.39.

1:35 — Excell Supply Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (7f)

Dream Vega is 5/4 favourite and straightforward enough at that price, but the angle here is Something Coming at 11/4 with Boyle Sports. Peter Chapple-Hyam’s filly has run five times and her best effort came last time out, a second, following a sequence that included a third on debut and a respectable second from the stall draw that day. She is improving, she clearly stays seven furlongs, and good ground suits. The market thinks Dream Vega wins this, but 5/4 is a price you are taking on trust about a filly who has only run twice. Something Coming has more form in the book and is arriving in better shape than the market suggests. Jack Callan is claiming 3lb which helps significantly on a tight track like this.

Keep an eye on Venetian Sky for William Haggas at 9/2. Three placings from her last three starts, improving each time, and the Haggas/Davies combination at Chester has a 22%/17% one-two punch that you cannot ignore. If Something Coming drifts at the off, Venetian Sky is a credible alternative.

2:10 — John Smith’s Handicap (5f, 13 runners)

Miraculous Each-Way at 13/2 with Boyle Sports or Betfred is the value play in this sprint handicap. Tim Easterby has sent out 14 winners in the last fortnight, a yard operating at full tilt, and David Allan knows how to ride a horse who needs covering up before producing his effort. Miraculous tops the speed figures in this field, and his third three starts back in what looks better form than most of his rivals can point to. Yes, he has been winless in his last six, but his figures have not dropped away. The concern is stall 13 on a five-furlong Chester track, where getting across can be an issue, but Allan is experienced enough to deal with that. Four places each-way at 1/5 the odds in a 13-runner handicap makes this a proper each-way bet at the price.

Alfa Duplicate is 5/2 favourite and the figures back that up at second on our ratings, but Ivan Furtado’s yard is 0 from 33 in the last fortnight. Zero wins from 33 runners is not a blip. That is a yard completely out of form and until the winners start flowing again, taking a short price about one of their runners is not smart money. Swerve.

The Flying Seagull at 11/1 each-way also appeals as a supplementary interest. Hugo Palmer’s four-year-old was a solid third last time and sits high in the figures. Palmer is 4 from 49 recently, which is modest, but the horse’s raw form says he can fill a place at that price in a competitive 13-runner field.

3:52 — Raymond & Kathleen Corbett Memorial City Plate Stakes (Listed, 7f)

This is the race of the day. Witness Stand tops the figures at 116 and is sent off at 5/2, which is fair rather than generous, and there is a legitimate concern around the fact he has yet to score in this sequence. But the second last time out was a clear, strong effort and a 35-day freshener suits. Good ground is proven. Stall 6 at Chester over seven furlongs is workable.

The angle for value, though, is Tiber Flow at 4/1 with any of the three firms. William Haggas at 22% at Chester with Harry Davies in the saddle is a combination you respect at every visit. Tiber Flow was a good second last time out and rates second on our figures at 110. Yes, the near 14-month absence before that run is the obvious query, but he came back and ran well, proving fitness. Today he steps up knowing his prep run is in the bank. Good ground and seven furlongs are both proven. Haggas does not bring horses to Chester without intent.

Holguin at 5/1 is worth a mention as a place proposition given the 63-day break and the fact he was winning two starts back before an unexplained sixth. But Tiber Flow is the stronger selection at a matching price.

Second on the figures at 110, proven on today’s ground and trip, and now sharper for that comeback. At 4/1 in a nine-runner Listed race, this is value against a favourite in Witness Stand who has not yet converted his placed runs into a win.
