Chester is one of the tightest, most unforgiving tracks in Britain, and on good ground the card today throws up three races worth serious attention. Trainers who know the Roodee win here at a clip, and the numbers back that up. Roger Varian is firing at 36% over the last fortnight with a 21% course strike rate, and Hugo Palmer’s 17% course record comes with an A/E of 1.16, meaning his runners are returning above expectation. Those are the yards to follow today.

2:10, Radnor Hills Handicap Stakes (1m4½f, Good)

A seven-runner staying handicap and the race opens up nicely for Timber Twelve (5/4, Boyle Sports and Betfred). This three-year-old gelding has three wins in his last five starts, including a victory two outings ago, and he brings solid experience of both today’s trip and the going. Chester’s tight, turning track suits horses that travel well through a race rather than grinders who need flat, galloping circuits, and Timber Twelve’s recent form suggests he has the pace to handle it.

The one query is trainer Michael Bell operating at just 1 from 22 in the past fortnight, which is a lean spell by anyone’s standards. That said, it’s a weak enough field and our top-rated runner, Westerton, is a six-year-old who has gone winless in his last five, which blunts that threat considerably.

Charmaine at 10/3 is the obvious danger. Five consecutive placed efforts, including a runner-up finish, tell you she’s consistently competitive. If Timber Twelve underperforms on the back of his trainer’s current form, Charmaine is the one who profits.

Calico Blue is the play here at 7/4 with Boyle Sports (15/8 Betfred). Roger Varian’s colt arrives on the back of a win last time out, has two victories in his last five starts, and his trainer is at a scorching 36% over the past two weeks. Varian’s 21% course record at Chester is rock solid too, and on good ground over six furlongs this is exactly the profile you want at the top of a Listed field.

The only genuine concern is whether a speed rating of 92 is enough at this level, but the comment data positions him as the most progressive and in-form runner in the field. Jack Mitchell’s mount Jazl (4/1) also won last time out, but the form figures behind that run look thin, and Jazl ranks at the bottom of the field on our figures.

Lifeplan at 11/4 carries back-to-back wins but has been off the track for 345 days. Even with promising form, that is a significant absence heading into a Listed race. The price doesn’t compensate for that risk.

Cieren Fallon takes the ride on Ardisia for Hugo Palmer, and while Fallon is Chester’s sharpest jockey by A/E rating among the stats (1.06 here), Ardisia has been winless for five and that form sequence offers little encouragement at 22/1.

Ten runners, seven furlongs, a proper handicap. Power Fizz Each-Way at 4/1 (Boyle Sports and Betfred) is the value pick and the most compelling angle on the card. William Haggas has an 18 from 44 record over the last fortnight, a staggering training strike rate, and his 22% course win record at Chester is the best of any trainer featured in today’s stats. Cieren Fallon is in the saddle, Chester’s standout jockey by A/E, and Power Fizz won two starts back with experience of both today’s trip and good ground.

The unplaced run last time out is the obvious flag, but in handicap company with the Haggas and Fallon combination combining, you overlook that at your peril. The yard fires horses into handicaps off a break with regularity, and the 36-day gap here fits the pattern.

Dance In The Storm (7/4) is the market leader for Andrew Balding, another trainer with a strong Chester record. But she’s been fifth and unplaced in her last two, and at 7/4 in a 10-runner handicap you need a horse delivering consistent form, not one looking to rediscover sparkle. K.R. Burke’s Korker is worth noting at 11/1 given a trainer firing at 26% over the last fortnight, but the form figures make it hard to commit.
