Cork, Sunday 3 May 2026: Tips and Best Bets

A three-race card worth focusing on at Cork today, with the Listed Polonia Stakes the highlight and a bumper 19-runner Premier Handicap over a mile and a half providing the most scope for value. Going is Good to Yielding on the round course, shading to Yielding in places, which will sort out a few of these on form alone. Here are the races worth your attention.

1:20 โ€” Irish EBF Auction Series Maiden (5f, Good To Yielding)

Selection: Edward Thatch โ€” 5/6 Bet365, 8/11 William Hill

This looks straightforward on the form book. Edward Thatch ran on debut at the Curragh on soft-to-heavy ground, showed masses of early speed, and was beaten only 3.5 lengths into third. The Spotlight is clear that better ground suits, and today he gets exactly that: Good to Yielding at Cork rather than the winter mud of the Curragh. The 5f trip over a conventional flat track suits a colt bred to be sharp. Robson de Aguiar's yard is showing a return of 2/15 in the last 14 days, which is modest, but this horse does not need the trainer to be in peak form to justify his favourite's price on a simple each-runner-has-had-one-start basis. He lines up as the most exposed horse in the field.

The each-way angle at 7/1 on Bit Of A Buzz is worth noting if you want a saver. He was three places back at Naas just six days ago, faded late, but shaped with enough promise that this easier five furlongs and the run under his belt could see him place at a big price. However, the main bet here is Edward Thatch to get the job done.

3:05 โ€” Goffs Irish EBF Polonia Stakes (Listed, 5ยฝf, Good To Yielding)

Selection: Havana Anna โ€” 8/13 William Hill, 8/13 Coral

No value at the price but no need to look elsewhere either. Havana Anna has an RPR of 120 in a race where the next best is Ipanema Queen on 111 and the rest are grouped below 101. She won a Listed race over 5f last season, pushed a Group 3 winner to a nose at Longchamp, and chased home the winner in the Cheveley Park at Group 1 level. That is a different class of form entirely.

The sole question is her Breeders' Cup run, which the Spotlight flags as a failure. Put a line through it: travelling across the Atlantic as a juvenile for a race of that nature rarely tells you the full story. Donnacha O'Brien's yard has thrown up one winner from five runners in the past fortnight, which is unremarkable but not alarming for a single fancied runner. Gavin Ryan takes the ride and the mare stays well within her comfort zone at 5ยฝ furlongs on ground she will handle.

At 8/13 this is a banker-in-a-double play rather than a standalone ante-post hero. If you are building a double, nail it on here.

Each-way note: Ipanema Queen Each-Way at 10/1 Bet365 has real claims for the places. She beat everyone in this field bar Havana Anna on multiple occasions last season, winning two Listed races over the minimum trip and finishing only narrowly behind a stablemate at Dundalk on her return. Three places at 1/5 odds in a ten-runner Listed race is generous. She reaches the frame at a huge price.

Also watch: Quiet Mutiny at 8/1 is intriguing on debut form alone. Her Fairyhouse maiden win was backed up magnificently when runner-up Precise went on to complete a Group 1 double in the Moyglare and Fillies' Mile. That is exceptional collateral form, and Gavin Cromwell placing her here suggests some confidence from the yard. The issue is she has not run since last July and steps straight into Listed company. The 8/1 carries plenty of unknown risk, but the pedigree nod to Lochsong, combined with that debut form, means she is not a horse to dismiss entirely.

3:43 โ€” HORSE AND JOCKEY HOTEL Cork Derby (Premier Handicap, 1m4f, Yielding)

Selection: Lifting Sails Each-Way โ€” 22/1 William Hill, Coral, Betfred

Nineteen runners, five places paid at 1/5 odds, and the going is Yielding. This race is made for each-way punting at a price, and Lifting Sails at 22/1 is the angle that makes most sense.

Jessica Harrington's yard has been in decent form, showing 4/33 over 14 days, and Lifting Sails is notably unexposed on turf. She won a maiden at Bellewstown by a wide margin and the Spotlight confirms she had no excuse at Lingfield last November on an artificial surface that simply did not suit her. Today she returns to turf and gets Yielding ground, which is the softer end of conditions and likely to play to her stamina. This is a 4yo filly who has only been seen four times, and the maiden form was eye-catching. Nathan Crosse rides, the trip suits, and 22/1 in a race of this nature offers excellent each-way value at five places.

The market leader Perry Mason carries the most legitimate going angle, his best form coming on very soft and testing ground, but the going today is described as Yielding rather than the heavy conditions he has thrived on. At 7/1 Bet365 the price does not fully account for that concern. He is the danger if the ground is riding slower than advertised.

Happy Pharoah showed last season he could win premier handicaps over slightly longer trips at Leopardstown, but he has to bounce off a flat seasonal debut at the Curragh and step up significantly. Not for me at 14/1.

Today's NAP

Havana Anna โ€” Goffs Irish EBF Polonia Stakes
Odds: 8/13 โ€” William Hill (others: 8/13 Coral, 1.73 Betfair Exchange)

An RPR of 120 towers over this Listed field and her form reads like a Group horse operating well within her limits. A nose second in a Group 3 at Longchamp and a Cheveley Park run behind True Love puts her in a different postcode to most of these rivals. Good to Yielding at Cork on 5ยฝ furlongs is a straightforward enough ask, and Gavin Ryan knows exactly what he is sitting on. Ipanema Queen fills the place at 10/1 if you want to box the two, but Havana Anna is the NAP.
