Cork, Friday 10 July 2026: Tips & Analysis

Good ground under sunny skies at Cork makes for a fair test, and with three hurdle races on the card there is enough to work with. The going should suit horses who travel fluently and stay the trip rather than grinders who need cut underfoot. Peter Smithers (7) catches the eye statistically at this venue, winning 25% of his rides here at a healthy A/E of 1.49, so any competitive ride from the apprentice deserves respect. Padraig Butler’s yard also punches above its weight at Cork with an A/E of 2.46, though his runners are not among the principals today.

8:00 RBC Brewin Dolphin Hurdle (3m, 11 runners)

The feature race of the early slot is a competitive 3m hurdle and the market tells you Reverend Hubert is the one to beat at 9/4. The eight-year-old is fourth on figures but the form reads well: a win a couple of starts back, a third last time out, and only one unplaced run in recent starts. Phillip Enright takes the ride for C Byrnes, whose yard has been quiet in the last fortnight, so the market support needs to do the talking here rather than trainer momentum. On a flat line the price is fair rather than generous.

The angle at bigger odds points firmly to Happy Jacky Each-Way at 11/1 with Boyle Sports or Betfred. Peter Smithers (7) retains the ride, and his 25% strike rate at Cork at an A/E of 1.49 is a genuine edge in a race this open. Yes, Happy Jacky shouldered 164lbs and finished sixth last time, but two wins in his last five starts over today’s trip and going show he belongs in this company. Mark Fahey has sent out two winners from seven runners in the past fortnight, so the yard is not cold. In an 11-runner hurdle at 3 miles where the favourite has questions of her own, Happy Jacky each-way at 11/1 (3 places, 1/5 odds) is the value play on the card.

Hewick heads the field on official ratings at 145 but his last three reads 9th, pulled up, 7th, and John Joseph Hanlon is 0 from 12 in the last 14 days. The rating edge is real but the yard is in a deep trough. Da Capo Glory is interesting with two consecutive runner-up finishes but has failed to convert in five and the unseat before those places gives pause.

5:10 Ashgrove Renewables Maiden Hurdle (2m1f, 14 runners)

Gordon Elliott saddles the odds-on favourite Hygge with Jack Kennedy in the plate. Four runs into his hurdling career and four thirds tells you he is consistent but not yet a winner, and Evens to 11/10 is a price that demands he finally converts. Elliott’s yard has returned 6 winners from 87 runners in the last 14 days, a low strike rate for the operation, which is worth noting.

The value sits with Mont Star at 10/3 (Boyle Sports or Betfred), trained by Henry De Bromhead with Mike O’Connor up. De Bromhead has been prolific at the top level and Mont Star, a three-year-old with a debut run of eighth behind him, is lightly raced and open to significant improvement. In a 14-runner maiden with an odds-on favourite that has already been beaten four times, a fresh three-year-old from a quality yard at 10/3 makes plenty of appeal. The question mark is whether Hygge simply proves too good on experience, but Mont Star’s immaturity cuts both ways, and first-time-out runners from De Bromhead’s string often improve sharply second time. This is a race for potential rather than proven form, and Mont Star has more of it than most in here.

5:45 DNG John Ryan Auctioneer Maiden Hurdle (2m1f, 20 runners)

Twenty runners in a maiden hurdle is a lottery but the market has narrowed it down quickly. It’s All Clear at 11/4 (Boyle Sports or Betfred) is the most interesting price on the card in this race. Trained by Mrs Julie Cashin with Ryan Treacy aboard, the five-year-old has consecutive thirds from his last two starts and the form line of 054-33 shows steady improvement. He handles today’s conditions, is clearly getting the hang of jumping hurdles, and a horse on a consistent upward curve in a wide-open 20-runner maiden is exactly the type you want to be with.

Cosmos D’ainay at 3/1 for Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy is the obvious market rival. The form reads 3/193 and there is a win buried in there, but Elliott’s 14-day numbers are modest (7 from 68) and the favourite Hygge in the earlier race will have already tested the yard’s Cork sharpness. It’s All Clear’s progressive profile and improving placed form gives me more confidence at a fractionally bigger price. In a 20-runner field, each-way is sensible but the price does not quite clear the 8/1 bar for the badge. Back it to win.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksHappy Jacky โ€” RBC Brewin Dolphin Hurdle (8:00, Cork)
Odds: 11/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 11/1 Betfred, 10/1 LiveScore Bet)

Peter Smithers (7) boasts a 25% win rate at Cork with an A/E of 1.49, and Happy Jacky gives him a live each-way chance at a generous price. Two wins from his last five, proven over 3 miles and good ground, and in a race where the market leader Hewick is trained by a yard that is 0 from 12 in the last fortnight, the value is obvious. Mark Fahey’s operation has two winners in the last 14 days showing it is not cold, and 11/1 in an 11-runner field paying three places is the best number on the Cork card.
