Curragh, Saturday 18 July 2026 — Good To Firm

A high-class Saturday card at the Curragh with three pattern races headlining, including the Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the top of the bill. Good to firm ground suits horses with speed and a clean action, and it’s worth noting that Ryan Moore’s 31% strike rate at this track from nearly 700 rides makes him a man to follow all day. Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s yard has been firing hard with a 20-from-56 record in the last fortnight, which is a stat worth keeping front of mind in the big races. The Belgian GP kicks off tomorrow at Spa, so racing gets the Saturday spotlight to itself.

3:25 — Tulfarris Hotel And Golf Resort Sapphire Stakes (Group 2, 5f)

A tight five-furlong Group 2 on good to firm, and the market has this as a two-horse race between Rosy Affair and Jakajaro. Both cases are legitimate but the price differential is the story here.

Rosy Affair is the 3/1 favourite and the form reads well enough: three wins from five starts, strong speed figure, and proven at today’s trip and going. George Boughey’s yard has gone 5-from-22 in the last 14 days, which is a solid clip. She’s a serious contender and the most obvious winning vehicle.

The selection, though, is Jakajaro at 4/1 with Boyle Sports. Robert Cowell trains this five-year-old primarily around quick ground and sharp tracks, and the Curragh’s straight five suits a horse with his profile. Two wins from his last five starts, a strong speed figure, and rated third of ten in the field. The dip to fourth and fifth in his last two isn’t ideal, but James Doyle rides Cover Up rather than this one, and Jamie Spencer is a sharp jockey who knows how to get a horse into a race from the front on cut ground. At 4/1 against a 3/1 market leader, the value sits with the longer price.

Rosy Affair is the one to beat and worth a saver each-way at 3/1 if you want cover, but the recommended play is Jakajaro at the top price.

4:00 — GAIN Railway Stakes (Group 2, 6f)

Seven two-year-olds go to post in what shapes as a clash between two O’Brien runners and the rest. Confucius is odds-on at 6/5 with Ryan Moore in the saddle, and Moore’s 31% course win rate makes that combination hard to dismiss.

The selection is Carry The Flag at 7/2 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. He tops the figures for this race, has won twice in this five-race spell including last time out, and has already handled today’s distance and going. The ninth-place blip three starts back was the anomaly in what is otherwise a consistent profile. Wayne Lordan keeps the ride and the O’Brien yard, although not in its hottest 14-day form at 4-from-34, clearly has a live runner here.

The key point is that Carry The Flag rates top of the field on figures and arrives in winning form. Confucius is the danger: second in the figures, solid speed figure, and Ryan Moore simply wins on everything at this track. But the head-to-head between the two O’Brien colts with Carry The Flag heading the figures and coming here off a win makes 7/2 look generous. At even money you’d take Confucius. At 7/2, Carry The Flag is the call.

With only seven runners and place terms covering just two places at 1/4 odds, this is a win bet.

4:35 — Juddmonte Irish Oaks (Group 1, 1m4f)

The flagship race of the day, and the one that demands the most attention. Eleven three-year-old fillies over a mile and four furlongs on good to firm, with a prize fund nudging €290,000.

The market points firmly at Earth Shot at 7/2, trained by William Haggas and ridden by James Doyle. The form is straightforward and compelling: two wins from four starts, the pattern alternating wins and seconds in a way that suggests a filly who shows up ready to run every time. Haggas goes at 18% from 55 runs at the Curragh, and Doyle’s course A/E of 1.13 from 51 rides is actually the best of any jockey with a meaningful sample here. She’s proven at today’s trip and going. The rating of fourth of eleven in the field is the one mild note of caution, but the clock form and momentum point firmly in her direction.

Johanna Walsh at 8/1 with Betfred is the each-way play. Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s yard has been in seriously strong form with 20 wins from 56 runners in the last 14 days. That’s a 36% strike rate and it demands attention in a Group 1. Johanna Walsh won two starts back and was runner-up last time out, with a pair of thirds before that. The pattern of placed runs at a high level, proven at today’s trip and going, and that yard form makes 8/1 generous for a filly who clearly handles this level.

Johanna Walsh Each-Way at 8/1 with Betfred. Three places at 1/5 odds means an each-way return at 8/5 if she fills the frame, and with the Joseph O’Brien yard running hot she’s a strong each-way play in the big one.

Earth Shot remains the most likely winner. But for value, Johanna Walsh at 8/1 each-way is the angle.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksCarry The Flag — GAIN Railway Stakes (4:00, Curragh)
Odds: 7/2 — Boyle Sports (others: 7/2 Betfred, 7/2 LiveScore Bet)

Tops the field figures in the Railway Stakes and arrives here in winning form from last time out, with today’s trip and going already firmly ticked. The O’Brien yard may not be at its very hottest in the last fortnight but this colt’s profile stands up on its own merits: two wins from five starts, the only real blot being a single below-par run sandwiched between better efforts. Confucius at 6/5 with Moore aboard is a serious rival, but 7/2 about the highest-rated runner in the field who is in-form and course-and-distance qualified represents clear value.
