Doncaster, Saturday 2 May 2026 — Good To Firm Tips
A tight seven-race card at Doncaster on quick ground today. The straight mile and six-furlong track suits horses that travel well and stay balanced on a fast surface. Three races stand out as genuinely interesting betting propositions, and one of them throws up a solid NAP.
6:27 — Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Handicap (6f)
Selection: Rose Of Honour — 3/1 William Hill (also 10/3 Midnite, 5.4 Betfair Exchange)
Two runs, two wins. That form line of 11 tells you everything you need to know about how James Tate's filly has arrived at this point in the season. She steps into handicap company for the first time, which always carries risk, but a horse that has won consecutive starts tends to be on an upward curve and the assessor can lag behind that trajectory.
Good to firm at Doncaster is exactly the surface you want for a lightly-raced filly bred to handle quick ground. Callum Rodriguez takes the ride and he's been in good nick. The concern is the unexposed nature of the form, but that cuts both ways: the handicapper hasn't seen enough of her either. At 3/1 in a six-runner field, this is a fair price on a horse with a higher ceiling than anything else here.
Territorial Knight is respected at 11/4 with Kevin Ryan's yard running at a decent 5/29 clip over the last fortnight, but Rose Of Honour represents the sharper value at current prices.
5:10 — Download The At The Races App Restricted Novice Stakes (1m)
Selection: Noelan Star — 6/5 Bet365 (also 5/4 Unibet, 11/10 William Hill)
Edward Bethell's yard has been in cracking form, hitting at 4/22 over the last 14 days, and Noelan Star brings a 1-1 record into this. Two runs, two wins, and now stepping into a novice stakes where the opposition looks manageable on paper.
The Gosden-trained Harmonics is the main danger on a debut fifth that suggests more improvement coming, and Mountain Cat from the Saeed bin Suroor stable is always worth respecting. But Noelan Star has already proven he handles a mile and can win on a quick surface. At odds-on, this isn't a betting race for the brave, but if you're building a treble or need a solid banker, this is your anchor leg.
My Ballyquinn at 7/2 is worth monitoring in running. David O'Meara's yard is firing, and a form line of 7-2 shows improvement, but Noelan Star is the right side of the market here.
5:50 — Ings Environmental Susan Duker Memorial EBF Novice Stakes (6f)
Selection: Romanza Each-Way — 4/1 Bet365 (also 5.0 Betfair Exchange, 7/2 William Hill)
Nine two-year-olds, all debut or near-debut, and the market has settled around Note To Self from the Gosden operation as the 2/1 favourite. That's understandable, Gosden juveniles habitually attract market confidence, and this yard is running at 11/36 which is outstanding for two weeks in a training environment. But 2/1 in a nine-runner juvenile novice is a short price when you don't know what any of these horses will produce.
Charlie Fellowes' Romanza at 4/1 is the more interesting proposition. Fellowes has been operating at 3/16 recently, the yard is ticking over, and Callum Rodriguez is aboard. In maiden and novice company at this stage of the season, fitness and stable confidence matter enormously. The 4/1 represents genuine each-way value in a nine-runner field paying three places at 1/5 the odds.
Rocket Boots at 5/1 is the other in-form angle: Daniel Tudhope rides and James Owen's stable has been flying at 10/43 over 14 days, while the horse's debut fourth shows he can compete. Either side of the Gosden favourite looks more appealing than taking 2/1 about an unknown quantity, however well-bred.
Today's NAP
Odds: 3/1 — William Hill (others: 10/3 Midnite, 5.4 Betfair Exchange)
Two from two, a trainer in James Tate who knows how to place a filly, and good to firm ground that suits a horse with a quick, clean action. Entering handicap company off a light profile means the assessor is working from limited evidence, and that tends to favour the horse more than the market appreciates. At 3/1 in a small field, this is not a price that will be around for long on race day.
