Doncaster, Saturday 6 June 2026: Tips, Angles and Best Bets

A seven-race card at Doncaster on good to firm ground, with showers forecast to keep things honest. The Derby is the obvious backdrop to the weekend, but there is proper racing value to be found on Town Moor today, particularly in the staying handicap and the sprint. William Buick’s 22% strike rate at this course is one of the best numbers on the card, and Hugo Palmer’s A/E of 1.1 here means his runners consistently outperform their market price. Both angles are worth tracking through the afternoon.

1:55 โ€” British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (6ยฝf)

Juvenile maiden fillies on debut or near-debut form, which means pedigree and market intel matter as much as racecourse evidence. Met Ball (K R Burke) heads the market at 11/8 Boyle Sports and for good reason. The half-sister to a 7f winner, she holds a Group 2 entry at the Curragh later this month, and Burke’s yard has been firing with 9 winners from 51 runners in the last 14 days. That level of yard form on a debut runner with black-type ambitions is a serious flag.

The danger is Jazz Queen at 5/1 (Boyle Sports), trained by Hugo Palmer whose 1.1 A/E at Doncaster marks him as a trainer who finds value here. Jazz Queen went close at Chester and this 6ยฝf trip at a galloping track looks sharper than her Haydock flop two weeks ago. Sean Bowen picks up the ride on Ashina for a yard running hot, and she commands respect on pedigree alone, but at 7/2 the price is skinny for a first-time starter.

Selection: Met Ball at 11/8 Boyle Sports. The Group 2 entry is not decoration, Burke’s 14-day numbers are strong, and the pedigree screams 6-7f on a fast surface.

2:30 โ€” Dysons And TPI Taping And Jointing Ltd Handicap (5f)

Rose Of Honour dominates the market at 13/8 and the case is obvious: unbeaten in three starts, won on this exact track last month over 6f on good to firm, and James Tate has sent out 3 winners from just 12 runners in the past fortnight. She drops to 5f, which is the only question, but as a Night Of Thunder filly bred for speed and with a TS of 55 (suggesting she has not fully unwound yet), the trip reduction could unlock more.

Toca Madera Each-Way at 11/4 (Boyle Sports) is the each-way play in this 11-runner handicap. He went very close at York last month off a reduced mark, David O’Meara’s yard has been in excellent form with 8 winners from 62 runners, and Daniel Tudhope is a top-level booking. Back up 2lb but the York run screamed a big effort was coming. Three places at 1/5 odds makes him attractive each-way at this price.

Naana’s Sparkle at 9/2 also warrants a mention after winning on stable debut following 208 days off, but 0 wins from 10 for the yard in 14 days is a cooler.

Selection: Rose Of Honour to win, Toca Madera each-way at 11/4.

3:05 โ€” Solar Xpress Handicap (1m6ยฝf)

The most interesting race on the card. Six runners, but a genuine puzzle at the head of the market.

Study Of Words at 6/5 is the Charlie Appleby/William Buick combination and you cannot dismiss either of those names at Doncaster. Buick wins at 22% here and Appleby at 22%. But the Spotlight is honest: he disappointed as a short-priced favourite on reappearance at Newmarket, and Appleby firing him out to 1m6ยฝf is very much a trainer throwing the kitchen sink at the problem. The cheekpieces are gone too. It could work, but at 6/5 you are taking a lot on faith.

Gaelic Approach at 7/2 (Boyle Sports) is the horse that appeals most. Four starts this season, two wins and two seconds, all in small-field handicaps. Won at 1m6f at Redcar last time, was 4/9 that day, and rises only 3lb. Sean Bowen has a remarkable 1.43 A/E at Doncaster, which is exceptional, and the trainer Charlie Johnston has been consistent. The concern is this is a bigger field than anything Gaelic Approach has faced, but the form is solid and the jockey booking is a genuine positive.

Any Which Way Each-Way at 10/3 (Boyle Sports) is worth serious consideration each-way. The Spotlight notes he sat deep at Windsor before finishing through beaten horses to claim second, and the analyst flags 1m6f as his trip. Michael Bell’s yard is 2/23 in 14 days, which is modest, but this horse has an upward trajectory on his figures and the step to this longer trip looks like the key.

Lopeo at 13/2 showed staying ability on heavy ground at Goodwood and ran a solid second over 1m4f here on reappearance. Unchanged mark makes him competitive, but David Menuisier’s 14-day numbers are not special. Each-way at a bigger price, he is not without a shout.

Selection: Gaelic Approach at 7/2, with Any Which Way each-way at 10/3 as the value play in this race.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksGaelic Approach โ€” Solar Xpress Handicap (3:05, Doncaster)
Odds: 7/2 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 7/2 Betfred, 10/3 LiveScore Bet)

Four runs this season, consistent as a metronome: two wins, two seconds, every run at 1m6f or shorter. He steps up to 1m6ยฝf today, which is a natural progression after winning over 1m6f at Redcar last time, and rises only 3lb. Sean Bowen’s A/E of 1.43 at Doncaster is the best jockey number on the card and his booking here is not coincidental. At 7/2 in a six-runner handicap where the market leader has form questions, this is the value call of the day.
