Doncaster, Thursday 9 July 2026: Tips and Best Bets

Doncaster bakes under mostly sunny skies on good to firm ground today, and a seven-race card throws up three races worth dissecting in detail. The straight mile and the Town Moor gallop both reward horses that travel well and quicken cleanly, so fitness and form on fast ground are the key filters across the board. Let’s get into it.

2:10 โ€” Betfred Champagne Trial EBF Novice Stakes (7f, 2yo)

Selection: Ottoman Chief at 6/4 (Betfred)

Charlie Appleby runs two here and it’s no surprise the market has zeroed in on Ottoman Chief at odds-on. The colt is debutant from Godolphin’s Moulton Paddocks operation, and while his lack of a public form line demands some faith, Appleby’s operation doesn’t send horses to a competitive 7f novice at Doncaster unless they’re primed to perform. The yard has hit 22% winners at this track over recent seasons with an A/E of 0.87, respectable for a high-volume operation, and they’re five from 25 in the last 14 days.

Billy Loughnane takes the ride, which is significant. He wouldn’t be steering a serious Appleby juvenile unless the stable thought highly of the horse’s homework. The good to firm ground is exactly what Godolphin’s Darley-bred two-year-olds tend to relish in early summer.

The danger is stablemate Quest For Stars with Connor Planas, and here’s where it gets interesting. Planas has a remarkable 30% strike rate at Doncaster with an A/E of 2.32, the standout jockey course stat on today’s card. At 14/1, Quest For Stars is worth a small saver each-way if you’re feeling adventurous. But the market has this right: Ottoman Chief is the horse Appleby wants to win.

Bulletsnap (William Haggas, Cieren Fallon) is not without claims at 7/1. Haggas has been in blistering form, going 10 from 29 in the last 14 days, and a third on debut suggests the colt is learning his trade. Worth noting for the place if you want to cover the race each-way.

2:45 โ€” Betfred St Leger Trial Novice Stakes (1m4f, 3yo)

Selection: Count Bezukhov at 7/4 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Joseph Patrick O’Brien saddles Count Bezukhov, and the angle here is straightforward: the trip and the occasion suit a horse bred to stay, and O’Brien’s 17% course strike rate at Doncaster comes with an A/E of 1.32, meaning his runners at this track outperform market expectations. The stable has been ticking over at 10 from 60 in the last 14 days.

A form line of 31 tells you this horse has already won and was placed before that. For a novice stepping up to a mile and four furlongs in a race named after the St Leger Trial, that form gives him a solid foundation that most rivals can’t match. Billy Loughnane is back in the saddle after landing the novice before this, which makes for a busy and productive afternoon if things go to plan.

According To Mark (Edward Bethell, Daniel Tudhope) and Hatteen (Andrew Balding, P J McDonald) are both available at 4/1 and represent the obvious dangers. Balding has been busy and productive with 14 wins from 68 in the past fortnight. But the form of Count Bezukhov reads the most convincingly for a race of this nature, and the 7/4 is workable at a track where O’Brien’s raiders are quietly dangerous.

3:55 โ€” Betfred ‘The Classic Bookmaker’ Handicap (1m2f)

Selection: Obito Each-Way at 8/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Room Fourteen is the even-money jolly and has an admirable recent profile, three placed efforts and two wins in her last five, so the market is right to make her favourite. But evens in an eight-runner handicap on good to firm ground offers no value whatsoever, and this is a race where the 8/1 shot is arguably the most interesting price on the board.

Obito tops the figures according to the race data despite carrying a hefty 142lbs, a significant detail. He’s been competitive without winning across his last five starts, finishing second twice, and the addition of a first-time hood is a meaningful equipment change that often triggers improvement in horses that have been running consistently but slightly below their best. David O’Meara’s yard is in decent form at 7 from 59 over the past two weeks, and Daniel Tudhope takes the ride.

The 1m2f trip and good to firm going are both confirmed as suitable from his profile. A horse that tops the figures, gets a cheekpiece for the first time, and is available at 8/1 in a competitive handicap is exactly the type of bet this column exists to highlight. Each-way is the play, with three places on offer at 1/5 odds.

Domination at 7/2 and Suddenly I See at 14/1 also feature strongly on the figures. Harriet Bethell’s Doncaster record is outstanding, an A/E of 1.59 from 21% winners at the course, and Domination is fit after a 34-day break with suitable conditions. He’s a legitimate each-way player if you want an alternative at a shorter price.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksObito โ€” Betfred ‘The Classic Bookmaker’ Handicap (3:55, Doncaster)
Odds: 8/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 8/1 Betfred, 15/2 LiveScore Bet)

Obito tops the race figures at 142lbs, has been knocking on the door with two runner-up finishes in his last five starts, and gets a first-time hood today, a change that frequently unlocks a handicapper who has been performing consistently without quite finding the key. The trip and going are proven positives, Daniel Tudhope is a high-quality booking, and 8/1 in a wide-open 1m2f handicap represents genuine value when the market leader is available at evens. David O’Meara’s yard is firing.
