Down Royal, Sunday 12 April 2026 — Tips & Selections

Good ground at Down Royal today across a seven-race card. The going suits horses with a touch of class rather than grinding mudlarks, and that filters the fields nicely. Three races stand out for punting purposes: the opener handicap hurdle, the beginners chase in the afternoon, and the big staying handicap chase to close the card. Here are the angles worth backing.

2:30 — Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Hurdle (2m4f, 11 runners)

Selection: Circus Act Each-Way at 14/1 (Bet365), 12/1 William Hill and Coral

This is a race Circus Act has already won. She landed this exact contest 12 months ago off a mark just 2lb lower than today, and that alone is worth circling in red. J A Nash sends her here with a quiet book of form since, only four runs between the Flat and hurdles, but the Spotlight flags her as ground-versatile and the good ground at Down Royal today is no obstacle whatsoever. She ran in a race that looks formidable now relative to this field, and a horse returning to the scene of a previous course-and-distance win at double-figure prices is precisely the sort of angle that pays the bills. The 14/1 available at Bet365 is generous given the course-winner angle.

The danger is Kp's Ladyofknock, the market leader at around 15/8. She has an absence to overcome but a solid run here when last seen, finishing third over course and distance. She will likely trade shorter in the ring. Dairy Force for Gordon Elliott has consistent form and looks the obvious second-favourite, but at 3/1 the value is thin when Circus Act is sitting at 14s with form in the book that matters most.

4:07 — Giddy Up And Switch To Fibrus Broadband Beginners Chase (2m4f, 6 runners)

Selection: Sandor Clegane at 11/10 (Bet365), 10/11 William Hill

The favourite in a small field is not where I usually want to be, but Sandor Clegane has a strong case here. His RPR of 136 towers over this field. The Kim Muir at Cheltenham is not a race where you go hiding, and the Spotlight notes he made smooth headway turning in before the effort faded. That is the profile of a horse who needed the race, not one who has lost it. The tongue tie returns today, Paul Nolan's yard has been ticking along at 2/14 in the 14-day window which is respectable without being spectacular, and this is a significant drop in class from Cheltenham Grade racing. The 2/1 available on Meet And Greet is shorter than it ought to be given that rival has been beaten 23 lengths in a Thurles handicap on his last start. Ballybow has ability but has been well beaten in four beginners' chase starts this season. Sandor Clegane should settle this at the business end.

4:37 — Switch To Fibrus Today And Save Handicap Chase (3m2f, 12 runners)

Selection: The Gradual Slope at 3/1 (William Hill, Coral)

Sean O'Brien's yard is running at 1/3 over the last 14 days, which is a small sample but points to a trainer in confident form. More importantly, The Gradual Slope is fresh off winning the Ladies National at Fairyhouse last week over 2m5f, a genuine performance, and steps up to 3m2f today, a trip he is clearly bred and built to stay. The handicapper has slapped 5lb on for that win, but he is still on a workable mark and the good ground at Down Royal suits a horse who won last week on a similar surface. Mark McDonagh takes the ride. His course form over hurdles at this track adds another layer of confidence. At 3/1 this is not the longest price on the card, but the form angle is recent and the step up in trip looks the final piece in the puzzle.

The market alternative is Brucejack at 11/2, who ran a fine race at Clonmel last time and whose Spotlight notes the trip increase is a help. He is worth a place in an each-way saver in a 12-runner handicap at those odds. Neon Diamond for Gordon Elliott at 10/1 is interesting too, the better ground suits according to the form notes, and with Josh Williamson claiming 5lb this is not without each-way claims. But The Gradual Slope is the one with winning form on the board from last week.

Today's NAP

The Gradual Slope — Switch To Fibrus Today And Save Handicap Chase (4:37, Down Royal)
Odds: 3/1 — William Hill (others: 3/1 Coral, 5.1 Betfair Exchange)

Won the Ladies National at Fairyhouse seven days ago in convincing fashion and now steps up to 3m2f, a trip he stays comfortably. Sean O'Brien's yard is in form, the good ground at Down Royal suits, and a 5lb penalty for a winner is a manageable burden in an open handicap. Recency of form combined with a clear trip angle at a price that represents genuine value makes this the bet of the day.
