Down Royal, Friday 19 June 2026: Tips and Best Bets

Seven races on the card at Down Royal on a Friday evening, with light rain keeping the going at Good. That surface suits horses with a bit of toe rather than out-and-out heavy-ground plodders, so watch for anything with proven form on a sound surface. Three featured races stand out with genuine angles, including one big-field maiden that warrants serious attention at a price.

5:10 โ€” Harvertech Maiden (5f, 2yo)

Selection: Tradewinds at 8/15 Boyle Sports and Betfred.

Donnacha O’Brien’s yard has been ticking over (1/12 last 14 days) rather than firing on all cylinders, but Tradewinds arrives here with the clear form edge in what is a modest 2yo maiden. Placed twice from two starts, the colt carries top weight of 133lbs alongside several rivals who are either debut runners or who have shown very little. Chris Hayes takes the ride, a positive booking at this level, and a Good surface suits a horse whose form has been run on similar ground.

The 8/15 price is short, and there is no each-way case worth making at those odds in a field of eight, but this looks a likely winner if the stable has him ready. The biggest danger is Quinn Blue for M D O’Callaghan, whose trainer has hit 2/12 in the past fortnight, and Leigh Roche is an able pilot. At 11/2 Quinn Blue is worth a small saver if you want to play the race each way.

5:40 โ€” Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap (5f, 7 runners)

Selection: Treasured Royal Each-Way at 4/1 Boyle Sports, Betfred, and LiveScore Bet.

Gavin Cromwell’s filly has been building steadily through her form figures of 0-0345, and that progression arc is exactly what you want to see from a three-year-old filly dropping into a fillies-only heat. She carries just 124lbs, the lightest of the three-year-olds in the field, and Rory Mulligan (5lb claimer) keeps the weight advantage intact. On Good ground, her recent placed efforts suggest she handles underfoot conditions that aren’t extreme in either direction.

The favourite Sarahmae has a form line reading -80601, which means her most recent effort was a win but she has been inconsistent, and Denis Hogan’s stable is running at just 2/21 over the past fortnight. That’s a yard that isn’t in the form of its life. Shadow Of The Moon is respected at 3/1 with John James Feane, whose course stats here (15% wins, A/E 1.21) are worth noting, but Wesley Joyce is a 3lb claimer and the 130lbs weight is a disadvantage at five furlongs. Treasured Royal at 4/1 offers genuine value with the each-way safety net in a race where the favourite looks overpriced given the stable’s current form.

7:25 โ€” BOYLE Sports Median Auction Maiden (7f, 17 runners)

Selection: Full Volume Each-Way at 3/1 Boyle Sports and LiveScore Bet.

Seventeen runners over seven furlongs is a cavalry charge, and in a race like this the angles that matter most are trainer form and jockey course stats. Mrs John Harrington’s yard has been in excellent shape, hitting 6/34 over the past 14 days, which is a yard operating at above its base rate. Crucially, Scott McCullagh takes the mount, and he is the standout jockey in the Down Royal course stats provided: 16% wins (3/19) with an A/E of 1.09, which tells you he rides the track well and his winners come at fair prices.

Full Volume is a debutant, so there is natural uncertainty, but the combination of a sharp trainer, the best jockey for this track, and a price of 3/1 in a 17-runner field is a compelling each-way proposition. Three places at 1/5 odds means the returns are solid even for a placed effort. Joga Bonito for Pat Twomey is the clear market leader at 5/6, and Twomey’s course record (37% wins, A/E 1.2) is exceptional. But Donagh O’Connor’s mount has a form line of just 42, and at odds-on in a 17-runner maiden the place terms offer precious little. High Morals at 7/2 is also on the shortlist, but the trainer has only one runner in the past fortnight. Full Volume at 3/1 is the each-way play of the card, with the Harrington-McCullagh combination the key angle.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksFull Volume โ€” BOYLE Sports Median Auction Maiden (19:25, Down Royal)
Odds: 3/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 LiveScore Bet)

The Harrington yard has been in strong form over the past fortnight (6/34) and Scott McCullagh is the standout jockey for this course by both win percentage and A/E score. In a 17-runner maiden with place terms of 3 places at 1/5 odds, the each-way case writes itself at 3/1. Joga Bonito deserves respect but at 5/6 in a big field with unknown quantities throughout, that price is simply too short to take.
