Downpatrick, Friday 8 May 2026 – Tips and Preview

Downpatrick hosts a seven-race card on Good To Yielding ground, and while the card is modest in class, there are three races with genuine angles worth following. The going should suit horses with some cut-ground experience but is fair enough to reward a horse with a clean jumping technique. Three races stand out, and the value in this card is concentrated in the handicap and the bigger-field maiden hurdles.

5:00 — Randox Maiden Hurdle (2m6f)

This is essentially a match between two, and the betting reflects that. Roc Dino heads the market having posted the better RPR figure (125), and Paul Townend in the plate at 4/7 is obviously a vote of confidence from the Mullins team. However, the Spotlight note is crucial here: all his best form has come on softer ground, and today's Good To Yielding surface is faster than he has encountered. That caveat opens the door.

Speculateur at 15/8 (Bet365) is the play. Gordon Elliott's runner has been consistently competitive in maiden hurdles, placing in five of them including Cork and Clonmel on his last two starts. He is a point winner, showed ability in bumpers, and his RPR of 126 actually edges Roc Dino on figures. Elliott's yard has had 6 winners from 73 runners in the last 14 days, which is ticking over, and Speculateur looks the stable pick. At nearly twice the price of the favourite, the value sits clearly with the Elliott gelding. If Roc Dino struggles to handle this ground, Speculateur takes this comfortably.

Selection: Speculateur, 15/8 Bet365

6:05 — SIS, Supporting Irish Racing Maiden Hurdle (2m3f)

Eighteen runners, but the market has spoken and it is hard to argue. Endless Talking at 1/2 (Bet365) is the banker of the day for Gavin Cromwell and Keith Donoghue. A point-to-point winner on good ground, he has been building steadily through his bumper and early hurdle career, and the key piece of form is his most recent start at Kilbeggan: the Spotlight confirms he met interference when finishing third behind the market leaders. Take that run away and he was unlucky not to go even closer. Cromwell's yard has been in solid form with four winners from 66 runs in the last fortnight, and Donoghue is a dependable partner.

The 3/1 available on Flying Ace (Gordon Elliott, Sam Ewing) is the only realistic alternative, but with RPR and form data limited, he remains an unknown quantity at this stage. Endless Talking's profile is clear and the each-way terms are irrelevant at this price: back him to win.

Selection: Endless Talking, 1/2 Bet365

6:35 — Angie Orr Still Celebrating Her 70th Birthday Mares Handicap Hurdle (2m2f)

Now here is where the value lives. Fourteen runners in a mares handicap hurdle, four places paid, and at least two horses with credible form at double-figure prices.

Small Bucks Each-Way at 8/1 (Bet365) is the pick. The five-year-old mare landed a 33/1 winner on good ground at Cork last summer, and her most recent start at Down Royal on Monday showed she is returning to form: she stayed on late over 2m, the ground is now coming right for her, and today's step up to 2m2f should suit a mare who clearly stays. Eoghan Finegan, who partnered her for that Cork win, is back in the plate. The trainer form is cold, but this mare's personal profile on her right surface is compelling. At 8/1 with four places paid, this is a proper each-way play.

Lagoon Nebula is interesting at 7/1. She won a competitive juvenile handicap hurdle at Cheltenham on good ground, and today's conditions mirror that. The refusal to race in a chase at Clonmel is a worry, but she shaped with promise on the Flat at Bellewstown last month and clearly retains ability. She gives the each-way pick a serious rival.

A Snow White Park at 9/2 is the market mover, and she has a Ballinrobe win over a subsequent Listed-class horse on her CV, but her form since has been patchy and she is hard to trust from handicap mark 117.

Selection: Small Bucks, 8/1 Bet365 (Each-Way)

Today's NAP

Endless Talking — SIS Supporting Irish Racing Maiden Hurdle (6:05, Downpatrick)
Odds: 1/2 — Bet365 (others: 1/2 BetWright, Evs Betfair Exchange)

This is as solid a NAP as you will find on a provincial card. A point-to-point winner on good ground, Endless Talking has been progressively better with each run and was hampered when finishing third at Kilbeggan last time out. Gavin Cromwell's yard is in form and Keith Donoghue knows this horse. In a 18-runner field that is otherwise packed with long shots and unknowns, his recent form stands head and shoulders above the rest. Short price, but genuine banker confidence.
