Downpatrick, Tuesday 14 July 2026

Seven races at Downpatrick today and while it is never a track that attracts the biggest yards in full throttle mode, the trainer stats tell an interesting story. Andrew Kinirons is the name to watch at this venue, striking at 40% with an A/E of 3.28, which means his runners consistently outperform their market prices. Gordon Elliott sends plenty here but his A/E of 0.89 tells you the market prices him up accurately, not generously. Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s 25% strike rate with an A/E of 1.41 is the more interesting number from the big yards. Keep those figures in mind as we go through the card.

2:07 โ€” ITBA Mares Maiden Hurdle (2m2f)

Selection: Fastnet Crystal (5/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Joseph Patrick O’Brien is running at 15 winners from 44 runners over the past fortnight, a 34% strike rate that is significantly above his course average and confirms the yard is in fine fettle right now. Richard Deegan takes the ride on Fastnet Crystal, a five-year-old mare with a form line of 20, which is sparse but not entirely without promise in a race like this. With only two hurdles runs to her name, she is unexposed and that matters in a twelve-runner maiden where several rivals have shown little in far more attempts.

Cool Native at the same price is the main danger, but that form includes an unseated rider and a four-flush away from hurdles. The Elliott yard, as noted, prices correctly rather than underhandedly here, so 5/2 about the O’Brien runner looks the smarter angle when the trainer is operating at this level of form.

In a twelve-runner field paying three places, there is each-way interest at the prices too. Each-Way Bayonetta at 7/1 is worth a small each-way play. Her form of P3-422 shows consistent placed efforts and Kevin Healy is a 7lb claimer who keeps the weight competitive. Three places at 1/5 odds makes this worthwhile.

2:37 โ€” Randox (C & G) Maiden Hurdle (2m2f)

Selection: Jet Renegade (9/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred)

This is where the Kinirons angle becomes directly applicable. His Downpatrick record of 40% winners with an A/E of 3.28 is extraordinary and Jet Renegade is his representative here at 9/2. The form of 367-54 is modest on the face of it, but there is a clear progression thread and Sean O’Keeffe takes the ride for a trainer who routinely gets horses to peak at this track.

Luker’s Tipple is the odds-on favourite at 5/6 and the Gavin Cromwell yard has been quiet over the past fortnight, returning zero winners from 45 runners. That is not a stat to ignore when the horse is priced as a near-certainty. Form of 392-34 for Luker’s Tipple is solid but the market appears to have overreacted to reputation over recent evidence.

Direct Approach at 5/1 for Elliott and Jack Kennedy is intriguing on debut over hurdles, but a single flat run of 9 gives you very little to go on. The value is with Kinirons at 9/2. If that trainer’s horses consistently win at a price above their market expectation, backing the favourite in this race makes no logical sense.

4:12 โ€” Go Fibrefast With Fibrus Broadband Rated Novice Hurdle (2m6f)

Selection: Surfin Usa (7/4, Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Willie Mullins sends Surfin Usa here and while his course A/E of 0.82 is below par, his overall dominance in Irish racing means his runners still win more often than most. The form line of 2/7-1 is the key detail. A winning hurdle run sandwiched between a placed effort and a remote seventh shows a horse that can deliver when conditions click. Brian Hayes takes the ride.

The Elliott pair Playtime and Lemmy Caution split the market and both are plausible. Lemmy Caution’s form of 336-13, showing a win last time out, is arguably the most consistent sequence in the race. Sam Ewing is a jockey who knows this track, striking at 16% with an A/E of 1.0, meaning his mounts are priced correctly on average. At 7/2, Lemmy Caution is worth a place in your thinking as a saver if you are on Surfin Usa.

Only six runners, two places at quarter odds, so each-way is not recommended here on the prices available. Win only.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksJet Renegade โ€” Randox (C & G) Maiden Hurdle (2:37, Downpatrick)
Odds: 9/2 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 9/2 Betfred, 9/2 LiveScore Bet)

Andrew Kinirons operates at 40% at this course with an A/E of 3.28, the standout trainer statistic on the entire card. His runners win at prices above their market expectation and Jet Renegade fits the profile of a horse ready to improve at a track where this yard thrives. The favourite Luker’s Tipple comes from a yard that has drawn a blank in 45 runners over the past fortnight. Opposing a cold favourite trained by a yard out of form and siding with the local specialist at 9/2 is precisely the kind of value angle this track rewards.
