Sunday Racing at Downpatrick: Best Bets for August 9
Downpatrick on a summer Sunday, good ground, and three races worth your attention. The County Down track suits a particular type: tough, honest animals that handle an undulating course and don’t need a flat gallop to show their best. The trainer stat that jumps off the page is S G Carey’s 46% strike rate here, though his sole runner today is in a maiden. Gordon Elliott’s 18% course record is solid in volume terms, but his yard has gone cold lately, firing at just 5% over the past fortnight. That’s a number you cannot ignore when Elliott runners are odds-on or thereabouts. Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s yard, by contrast, has been busy and productive, with 11 winners from 76 runners in the last 14 days.
1:58 โ WTW Willis Mares Maiden Hurdle (2m2f)
The market favourite Shoda is sent off on the back of modest form, with her best effort a third from five starts, and nothing in the figures screams she has to win this. J J Slevin is an excellent jockey, and Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s yard is in form, but 4/5 about a horse yet to win and heading to a track that rewards experience is a very short price.
Selection: Clanokre Lass at 6/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Gordon Elliott’s yard may be under-firing on the national picture, but Clanokre Lass is a 4yo filly with only two runs under her belt, showing a fourth and a sixth. She’s unexposed, she’s at a course where Elliott has 170 wins and counting, and Sam Ewing riding is relevant here: Ewing hits 17% winners at Downpatrick with an above-par A/E of 1.04. At 6/1 in a weak maiden, there’s a case to take a view at this price rather than lay out at 4/5 about Shoda.
2:33 โ Randox Rated Hurdle (2m2f)
Seven runners, Elliott’s cold yard dominating the market with two of the three shortest-priced runners. Cosmos d’Ainay is the 8/11 favourite under Jack Kennedy, and you’d have to respect a recent winner returning over a trip and going he handles. But the trainer’s 5% over 42 attempts in the past fortnight is a genuine red flag, not just a stat to wave away. Kennedy’s own A/E at this course is 0.76, meaning his mounts underperform their market prices here.
Selection: Chanceawetmorning at 3/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Yes, same yard, same trainer concern, but the form reads better than the favourite’s. A winner one start back, wins three and four starts back, and experience at today’s trip and on good ground. Josh Williamson takes the ride, and that matters: the 5lb claimer hits 21% winners at Downpatrick with an A/E of 1.36, meaning his mounts consistently outperform their odds here. If Elliott’s runners are going to fire today, back the one with the better recent record and the jockey whose Downpatrick numbers are genuinely impressive. At 3/1 versus the 8/11 shot from the same cold yard, Chanceawetmorning represents the value play in the race.
3:43 โ Franco Hughes Away Bet Mares Handicap Hurdle (2m6f)
Twelve runners, four places, good ground, and a wide-open heat. This is the race of the day for each-way punters. The market is led by Samba Train at 2/1 for E Bolger, whose yard has gone 0/4 in the last fortnight. That’s a small sample, but it’s not the green light you want. The unseating last time out is also something to factor in.
Selection: Theflyingbee Each-Way at 15/2 (Betfred, 7/1 Boyle Sports). This 9yo mare has finished placed in five consecutive starts, including second last time out and third in the two runs before that. She is battle-hardened, handles today’s trip and going, and rates highest of the each-way outsiders on the form figures. The 87-day break is the obvious worry, but the consistency of her recent placed efforts suggests she comes ready when she runs. At 15/2 with four places paid at 1/5 odds, the each-way return is generous in a race where the two market leaders both carry significant question marks. Patrick M O’Brien takes the ride on Joya Del Mar and may outrun her price at 11/1, but Theflyingbee’s placed record and higher rating make her the more reliable each-way proposition.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 3/1 โ Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred)
The Elliott yard is operating at 5% over the last fortnight, which undermines the short-priced favourite Cosmos d’Ainay from the same stable. Chanceawetmorning has the stronger recent winning form, handles today’s trip and going, and critically gets Josh Williamson aboard: a jockey hitting 21% at this course with an A/E of 1.36. Backing the value runner from a cold yard over the odds-on favourite from that same yard, with a jockey who genuinely overperforms here, makes this the clearest angle on the card.
