My selection is Tiora Time at 8/11 (Boyle Sports). The form reads 312, Bishop is a banker at this course, and Clover’s yard is operating at a healthy clip. Short price, yes, but the alternative is taking a shot at something with a 6 and 7 on the form card. This is a race to win, not speculate in.

Eight runners, a proper handicap, and some genuinely intriguing form lines. The data points immediately to two horses.

Modern Times at 9/4 (all firms) is the one who won last time out and has course, trip, and going experience. James Owen again, whose 9 from 45 in the last 14 days is a serious training yard statistic. David Probert rides, and the 533631 form sequence shows the winner’s run is not a fluke. The concern is consistency earlier in that sequence, and carrying 133lb from stall three against a field with some well-handicapped rivals.

The horse I want is Sir Garfield Each-Way at 11/4 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Trained by John and Sean Quinn, whose Epsom course record stands at a remarkable 29% with an A/E of 1.79, this is exactly the kind of angle that separates a value tip from a lazy punt. Quinn’s yard at this track simply over-performs the market. Jason Hart is aboard, and Hart’s own Epsom numbers are solid at 18%. Sir Garfield ran back-to-back winners three and four starts ago, and the 16-day turnaround suggests the yard is targeting this. Yes, the last two efforts were a sixth and eighth, but Quinn at Epsom at 11/4 demands respect. Three places at 1/5 odds gives you coverage.

Angel Gabriel is worth a mention at 9/2 for Ralph Beckett, another trainer with a strong Epsom profile (18%, A/E 1.06). Third last time, winner four starts back, and a quick turnaround. He is the danger to Sir Garfield.

5:13 — Betfred ‘Double Delight’ Handicap Stakes (1m½f, Good To Firm)

Four runners but a fascinating contest. Sir Mark Prescott saddles Chantelle, and at Epsom his 25% course strike rate with 112 runners behind it is not a small sample. Prescott does not send horses to Epsom to make up the numbers.

But the form angle here belongs to Trio at 6/5 (Boyle Sports), trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, whose Epsom record reads 18% with an A/E of 1.18. Back-to-back wins. Experience of this trip and going. Charles Bishop in the saddle, who is a man for this course. The 335711 form sequence is progressive and purposeful.

Chantelle (5/4) is desperately close in price and has two wins in her last four, but the 134lb burden is the concern flagged in her race comment, and Trio arriving on the crest of consecutive victories with a trainer and jockey combination that both over-perform at Epsom makes her my selection.
