A six-race card at Ffos Las on a decent surface for mid-summer. Good to soft is the reading and it should stay that way under mostly sunny skies. Three races to focus on here, with a couple of angles worth getting stuck into. Rossa Ryan leads the jockey stats at this track with a 26% strike rate and an A/E of 1.35, so anything he rides deserves a second look. Jono Channon also posts a 21% trainer record here with a positive A/E, and his runner in the maiden is very much in the mix.

2:30 — South Wales Medical Event Cover Handicap (6f, Handicap)

Only seven runners, so each-way terms are modest, but there is a clear form angle to exploit in a race that sets up well for the in-form sprinters.

On Edge arrives here off the back of a neck win at Chepstow, finishing strongly and doing it the hard way. The form line reads 2218-1, which tells you everything: this is a horse who finds his feet and puts in a career-best when conditions suit. Six furlongs on good to soft is right in his wheelhouse, and Billy Loughnane takes the ride, a jockey who gets the job done at this level. The first-time visor is a talking point rather than a concern. C Mason’s yard is quiet at 0/6 over the past 14 days, but the Chepstow win came before this sample and the handicapper has not been harsh. At 5/2 with Betfred, he is the value call in a seven-runner field where the market has clearly not fully accounted for that last run.

Keep an eye on Punchbowl Flyer at 6/1. The veteran won at Chepstow last time too, digs in gamely, and goes on ground with cut. He is not dismissed lightly, but On Edge’s trajectory is steeper and he gets the nod.

3:00 — Connolly’s Red Mills ‘Confined’ Handicap (5f, Handicap)

Six runners over the minimum trip. Harry’s Halo is the class act here and the market has him right at 11/10, but there is a legitimate each-way angle at bigger odds.

The form reads 470-33, which on the surface looks like a horse who keeps getting beaten. Look closer: third at Carlisle last time, beaten two lengths off a mark one pound higher than today. K Frost’s yard is firing at 3/14 over the past 14 days, and Rossa Ryan takes the ride. Ryan’s course stats here are outstanding, 26% wins and an A/E of 1.35, arguably the standout jockey stat across the whole meeting. The conditions suit: five furlongs with cut in the ground is exactly what this horse wants. The opposition in a confined six-runner field is modest. At evens-plus, this is a genuine win bet rather than a saver.

Hint Of Humour at 7/2 is the main danger. Multiple placed efforts including a second last time, and A W Carroll’s yard has been prolific with 12 wins from 49 runners in the past fortnight. The Newbury run can be excused. However, most of Hint Of Humour’s best form has come on the all-weather, and good to soft on turf may not be ideal. Harry’s Halo gets the vote on going grounds.

3:30 — Vibe Recruit Maiden Stakes (7½f, Maiden)

Nine runners, no standout form figures across the board, but two horses separate themselves from the field with progressive profiles.

Selection: West Byfleet (11/4 Boyle Sports)

Three runs, two placings, and each performance has built on the last. Beaten three-quarters of a length into second at Goodwood last time, West Byfleet handles this trip well and the step up to seven and a half furlongs looks like it will suit a horse who stays on rather than quickens. Critically, trainer Jono Channon is at 30% over the past 14 days and posts a 21% course record at Ffos Las with a positive A/E of 1.19. This yard knows the track and knows when to send them. Billy Loughnane, who also rides On Edge in the earlier race, is in good form throughout this card. The 52-day break is worth flagging but Channon horses often come back ready to go.

English Time at 8/11 is the market leader and a fair favourite. Runner-up by a neck at Doncaster last time, improving with each run, and Lewis Edmunds rides for Harry Charlton who is 3/13 in the past fortnight. The problem is the price. At 8/11 in a maiden, you are laying out to win very little margin for error. West Byfleet at 11/4 with a trainer in full swing offers significantly better value for a horse with a realistic shot at reversing that Doncaster form over extra yardage.

Foxy Night at 4/1 is worth a mention too. Consistent at seven furlongs on soft ground, and Callum Hutchinson has an A/E of 1.43 at this course, the best of any jockey listed here. Not dismissed, but West Byfleet is the pick.

Six furlongs is his distance, the first-time visor adds rather than detracts, and Billy Loughnane on board keeps this a professional operation. The yard stats are quiet but the horse himself is clearly at the top of his game right now. At 5/2, this is a fair price for a horse coming into a weak seven-runner handicap off a fresh win.
