Glorious Goodwood is hogging the headlines this week, but Ffos Las offers a tighter, more workable card for those who prefer value over volume. Good ground suits the track well, the field sizes are manageable, and with a decent nursery handicap and a small but intriguing sprint handicap on the card, there are angles worth following. Three races stand out. Here is what the form says.

Ten runners in a 2yo nursery is exactly the scenario where you want the horse who tops the figures and fits the conditions. Dream On Kent does both. Trainer David Evans has been in red-hot form over the last fortnight, saddling four winners from 14 runners (29%), and this gelding clearly has ability, posting back-to-back seconds two and three starts ago before a below-par sixth last time. That sixth is best forgiven on figures rather than taken as gospel.

The 24-day break looks deliberate. He has experience over today’s trip and today’s going, and Ryan Kavanagh rides with a 3lb claim to help. The comment on our figures has him as the one to beat in this field, rated clear of his official mark. At 3/1 in a ten-runner nursery, three places are paid at 1/5 odds, so an each-way interest is very much in order.

Each-Way angle: 3 places at 1/5 odds. Jazzy Bay (Callum Hutchinson, 4/1 BoyleSports) is the most obvious danger, third in three of his last four, but he has not won in four attempts and the figures have him just below Dream On Kent. Ariane Sky is interesting given the James Owen yard is firing at 37% over the last fortnight, but she needs to prove she is better than her three modest runs suggest.

6:30 — DragonBet/Martin Davies Handicap Stakes (7½f, Good)

Selection: Flyta — 15/8 Boyle Sports and Betfred

Five runners, two places, and a straightforward read of the form. Flyta won last time out and arrives here 29 days fresh with experience over today’s trip and today’s going. The sequence reads second, unplaced, fourth, second, then win: this is a filly who needed those runs to find her stride, and she found it at exactly the right moment. Mark Loughnane’s yard has been quieter of late at 1/11 over the last 14 days, but the horse’s own form is the story here, not the trainer’s recent strike rate.

Rob Hornby takes the ride. His Ffos Las record is excellent: 20% winners from 97 rides at an A/E of 1.22, meaning he consistently outperforms the market at this track. That is not a coincidence. Hornby knows how to ride Ffos Las, and he is on the horse who arrives in the best form of the quintet.

The market favourite, Distinct Spirit, has been placed in both recent starts but has not won in four, and at 10/11 you are getting almost nothing back if he simply finishes second again. Flyta at 15/8 is the better bet.

7:30 — Christian Holland/Ken Howell Sports Betting Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (1m4f, Good)

Selection: Seacole — 5/2 Boyle Sports and Betfred

Four runners and a maiden over a mile and four furlongs. The market has gone for Summerson (11/8 favourite) on the back of two runner-up finishes, but Ralph Beckett’s Seacole at 5/2 represents a more interesting play. Beckett is the standout trainer at Ffos Las by volume: 25% winners from 106 runs, and his strike rate here is a genuine course-specialist figure. The A/E of 0.95 says the market does not always price his runners up, which means 5/2 against an 11/8 shot from a trainer with a lesser Ffos Las record (Roger Varian, A/E 0.65) has genuine value.

Seacole’s form reads 24, second and fourth, showing she handles distance and is not without ability. The step up to a mile and four on good ground looks like exactly the conditions Beckett will have targeted. Rhys Clutterbuck keeps the ride. This is a small field, so no each-way case, but at 5/2 for a Beckett filly at a track where the trainer performs well, the win bet has merit.

Summerson has the consistency argument, but with Roger Varian’s A/E at Ffos Las sitting at just 0.65, his runners here tend to be overrated by the market. K.R. Burke’s Khepri is interesting at 4/1, the yard in strong form at 9/27 (33%) over the last fortnight, but Pierre-Louis Jamin does not have the Ffos Las book that Beckett’s stable jockey can call on.
