End-of-Season Stakes: Who Needs This More?
Fiorentina vs Atalanta to close out the Serie A season on a Friday night. On paper it looks like a dead rubber, but the table tells a different story for at least one of these sides. Fiorentina sit 15th on 41 points, the kind of finish that will have Paolo Vanoli under serious scrutiny this summer. Atalanta are 7th on 58 points under Raffaele Palladino and may still have one eye on where the final European placings land.
Form for Fiorentina has been patchy at best. They beat Juventus 2-0 away from home, which looks impressive on its surface, but that result sits surrounded by three draws and a 4-0 thumping at Roma. Across their last five Serie A outings they’ve scored three and conceded five. There’s no real threat in those numbers. The Juventus win looks like an anomaly rather than a turning point.
Atalanta haven’t been convincing either. A 3-2 win at AC Milan showed they can produce big moments, but they’ve also lost at home to Bologna and lost away at Cagliari. Six goals scored, seven conceded across five matches. They drew 1-1 with Lazio in the Coppa Italia semi-final back in April. Neither side is going into this full of confidence.
Injuries and Team News
Parisi is out for Fiorentina. On the Atalanta side, Ranieri and Bernasconi are both missing, and crucially, Moise Kean is listed as questionable. That matters. Kean leads Fiorentina’s scoring charts this season with 8 goals in 26 appearances, and if he doesn’t start or doesn’t finish this one, they lose their primary route to goal. Rolando Mandragora has chipped in with 7 goals from midfield, and Albert Guรฐmundsson has 5, but neither is a natural focal point in the same way Kean is when he’s on form. If he’s watching from the stands or the bench, Fiorentina’s attack looks considerably blunter.
Atalanta’s top scorers are Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstoviฤ, both on 10 goals for the season. With Krstoviฤ also contributing 5 assists in 33 appearances, he’s been the more consistent threat. Both should be available here and they’ll fancy their chances against a Fiorentina defence that’s shipped goals regularly on their travels.
Head-to-Head and the Betting Angle
The recent H2H record is tight. Atalanta won 2-0 at home earlier this season in November. Before that, Fiorentina won 1-0 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in March. Going back to last season, Atalanta beat them 3-2 at home, and they also put Fiorentina to the sword 4-1 in the Coppa Italia. Fiorentina did win a league match 3-2 at Atalanta last season in June, so it’s not one-way traffic, but Atalanta have generally had the better of it in recent meetings.
The 17-point gap in the table is significant. Atalanta are a better-organised side with better individual quality when it counts. Fiorentina have had a poor season by their own standards, finishing well below expectations. The Kean injury doubt is the thing that makes this feel like a Atalanta match more than anything. If their top scorer is absent or limited, and Atalanta bring their main strikers, the quality differential becomes obvious quickly.
Both sides have been involved in high-scoring games, and the head-to-head history is full of goals. Four of the last five meetings between these sides saw at least three goals. With both teams having nothing to lose and Atalanta’s attacking quality via Scamacca and Krstoviฤ, the game going over 2.5 goals feels the more likely outcome. But for an outright result, Atalanta at 2.60 represents the value here. Better side, better squad depth, and a questionable Fiorentina attack potentially missing its main striker on a Friday night in Florence.
Odds: 2.60 โ BoyleSports
Atalanta are 17 points better off in the table for a reason, and Kean’s fitness doubt could leave Fiorentina toothless up top. Scamacca and Krstoviฤ have the quality to punish a home side that’s shipped goals all season, and Atalanta have won the last meeting between these two earlier this campaign.
