The Galway Festival rolls on and Wednesday’s card is headlined by the Grade 3 Tote Galway Plate, one of the most competitive handicap chases in the Irish calendar. Good ground suits a wide range of types across the card, and with 25 runners in the Plate and 23 in the mares’ hurdle, there is serious each-way value to hunt. Three races stand out for punters willing to dig beyond the market leaders.

Twenty-three runners and five places paid at 1/5 odds. This is exactly the race to be playing each-way, and the selection here is She’s A Fine Wine Each-Way at 9/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred.

Henry De Bromhead’s eight-year-old has won two of her last five starts, including last time out, and both wins came over this trip on going that matches today’s conditions. The only blemish in recent form is a ninth three starts back, which sits awkwardly in an otherwise solid profile. De Bromhead’s yard has sent out six winners from 39 runners in the last 14 days, a healthy enough clip at a festival meeting where trainers send their ready horses.

The danger is Venusienne for Willie Mullins at 4/1. She won two starts back and was placed last time, and Mullins always runs a strong book here. His 16% course strike rate is solid in volume terms. But Mullins is currently running at an A/E of just 0.83 at Galway, meaning his runners are returning below expectations relative to their prices. At 4/1 there is no value in taking that on. She’s A Fine Wine at 9/1, with her double winning form fresh in the book, is the each-way bet.

Zahra Dodville at 10/1 for the in-form James Owen yard is also worth a small saver each-way. Owen has been operating at 15 winners from 42 runners over the last fortnight, which is a barn that is firing, and jockey Calum Hogan carries an impressive A/E of 1.87 at this course from a small sample. The runner-up finish last time out and previous win give her a live each-way claim in a wide-open race.

The big one. Twenty-five runners, six places at 1/5 odds, and a race that rewards course knowledge, fitness, and a yard that is ready to fire. The market is led by Funiculi Funicula at 9/2 for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend, and on paper the recent form reads well: four placed efforts, two of those wins, with the only question being 89 days off the track.

Noel Meade’s ten-year-old won last time out and has been racing consistently throughout recent starts, with only one poor effort interrupting a sequence of places. He handles today’s good ground, has experience at this trip, and Meade is currently running at three winners from 13 runners in the last fortnight, a sharp recent conversion rate. Jesse Evans is rated above his official mark according to the figures, which in a competitive handicap is exactly what you want. The 58-day turnaround is not a concern for a seasoned ten-year-old who has clearly thrived since his last outing.

The horse the market has right at the top is Senecia at 50/1. The comment data rates him as the figure horse and he won last time out, but two pulled-up efforts in his last five runs are a real concern in a race this competitive, and at 50/1 the risk is clear. He qualifies as an interest bet at best.

Three Card Brag at 18/1 for Gordon Elliott also catches the eye as a longer-priced each-way option. Runner-up last time out, handles the trip and going, and sits close behind the top figure in the field. Elliott’s 14-day stats (3 from 35) are moderate but the horse’s own form does the talking here.

Thirteen runners and four places. The form horse at the head of the market is Kirkland Sioux at 4/1 for Joseph Patrick O’Brien, who has been operating at 19 winners from 68 runners over the last fortnight. Back-to-back wins look compelling on the surface, but the figures place her near the bottom of this field, which is a red flag when the top figures belong elsewhere.

Gary Carroll’s mount for G M Lyons won last time out and has been placed on every other start in recent form, never finishing worse than third before that winning effort.
