Galway Festival Tips: Thursday July 30, 2026

The Galway Festival rolls on and Thursday’s card is headlined by the €162,000 Guinness Galway Hurdle, one of the most competitive handicaps in the Irish racing calendar. Good ground suits a wide range of types and the draw card is a proper one. With 21 runners in the big one, placing picks matter as much as outright selection, and three other decent contests round out the afternoon. Here are the angles worth following.

2:45 — Arthur Guinness Irish EBF Corrib Fillies Stakes (Listed, 7f, Good)

Joseph O’Brien is firing on all cylinders right now, 16 winners from 67 runners in the past fortnight puts him at 28%, and he runs three fillies in this ten-runner Listed contest. Of those, Celtic Motif at 10/1 (Boyle Sports) is the most interesting. She won last time out, ran second three starts back, and has experience over today’s trip and going. Trainer stats back the yard being in form, and 133lbs is a manageable burden. The price is fair given the in-form stable.

The market leader Black Caviar Gold is trained by P Twomey, who posts 22% here at Galway with an A/E of 1.34, strong course numbers. But a 9th last time out leaves questions unanswered. At 9/4 you need convincing, and that run doesn’t convince.

La Brodeuse at 7/1 (Boyle Sports) has the ratings appeal, but Kevin Ryan has gone 0 from 21 in the past fortnight. No matter how good the horse, a trainer stone cold out of form is a red flag. Leave alone.

Selection: Celtic Motif at 10/1 (Boyle Sports). Won last time, right trip, hot yard.

3:20 — Guinness Open Gate Brewery Novice Chase (Grade 3, 2m2f, Good)

Seven runners, small field, so no each-way flags here. Shadow Paddy is odds-on at 6/5 and has two wins from his last two starts. The P in the middle of his form string is a minor concern, but horses can pull up for any number of reasons and he bounced back to win twice after. Trainer Eoin McCarthy hit 1/14 in the past fortnight, not a yard in howling form, but the horse’s profile speaks loudly enough.

The value call is Wild Bill Hickok at 4/1 (Boyle Sports). He won two starts back, ran third last time, and has been placed in three of his last four starts. This 4yo carries the minimum 151lbs and Ciaran Murphy has 1/11 in the past fortnight. At 4/1 in a Grade 3 novice, he looks a fair price against the jolly. If Shadow Paddy is not at his very best over fences, this lad will be right there to pounce.

Le Coq Hardi at 5/1 is also solid. Henry De Bromhead has been in good recent form (6/39 in 14 days), and a second and win from the last two starts is a proper profile. Worth a saver if you want to cover the favourite.

Selection: Wild Bill Hickok at 4/1 (Boyle Sports). Value against an odds-on shot with a pull-up in his recent form.

4:30 — Guinness Galway Hurdle Handicap (Grade 3, 2m, Good, €162,000)

Twenty-one runners, six places paid at 1/5 odds, and a Grade 3 worth €162,000. This is the race of the week at Galway and the angle requires care. Backing the 11/2 favourite in a 21-runner handicap is never great value thinking, so work out from there.

Solness Each-Way at 11/1 (Boyle Sports, 11/1 Betfred) is the selection. Trainer Joseph O’Brien is firing at 28% over the past fortnight, the horse ran third two starts back and second last time, showing he is in a rich vein of consistent form. He has experience over today’s 2m trip on good ground, and arriving just 11 days after a placed run suggests he is fit and ready. At 11/1 with six places paid at 1/5 odds, you are getting solid each-way value in a highly competitive race. J J Slevin is an excellent pilot in these big festival handicaps.

Ndaawi Each-Way at 12/1 (Boyle Sports) also deserves a mention. Won last time out, has form over the trip and going, and 12/1 in a 21-runner field with six places is a fair return. The 60-day absence is the only real query. Gordon Elliott’s yard has 4/30 in the past fortnight, which is modest, but for a big-race stable that number can be misleading when they wheel out their festival horses.

Laafi Each-Way at 8/1 (Boyle Sports) ran second last time and the disqualification before that muddies the waters but doesn’t destroy the profile. Patrick M O’Brien (5lb claimer) rides, and that jockey posts an A/E of 2.24 at this track from 17 rides. That is a standout stat. The 82-day absence and 156lbs are genuine negatives, but 8/1 with the in-form course jockey gives the bet real texture.

El Cairos at 11/2 is market leader and Jack Kennedy rides. Kennedy is 15% at Galway but his A/E of 0.91 suggests he marginally underperforms expectations here. El Cairos himself was fourth last time and fifth two starts back. Ninety-three days off the track at the top of the market is not a price you need to chase.

Selection: Solness each-way at 11/1 (Boyle Sports). In-form yard, consistent recent form, right trip and going, cracking festival price in a six-place race.
