Goodwood, Friday 5 June 2026: Evening Card Preview
Six apprentice contests on the Sussex Downs this evening, with good to soft ground throughout and a card that rewards those who can read past the obvious. The Gosden yard has solid recent numbers (7/26 last 14 days) and James Owen’s string is in decent nick too. Jack Dace is the jockey to follow here given his 17% course strike-rate and an A/E of 1.71 at Goodwood, which is outstanding. The Epsom Derby fires up tomorrow, so form students will have eyes in two places, but there’s plenty of value to dig out on this evening ticket first.
5:25 โ Track Radio On Digital & DAB Apprentice Handicap (1m1f)
Selection: Tilani (2/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred)
The case writes itself. Tilani won his last two starts, both 1m handicaps on good ground at Newbury and Yarmouth, and crucially he has already won on soft. Ian Williams’s yard is quiet (1/24 last 14 days) but the horse is clearly in a rich vein, and the Spotlight makes the point clearly: he’s on a roll. The 6lb penalty is the obvious question, but stepping from Yarmouth to Goodwood in good-to-soft conditions suits a gelding who handles cut. Critically, Jack Dace rides, and that Goodwood record of 17% winners at an A/E of 1.71 is not a coincidence. The 2/1 looks fair rather than generous given the penalty, but in an apprentice handicap this short, Dace’s course nous is a genuine edge.
Platinum Prince won this race 12 months ago and retains ability, but the Spotlight flags his last run on fast ground was far from ideal and he’s no spring chicken at nine. Bizou’s concern is the soft ground she’s never looked comfortable on. Tilani wins this.
5:55 โ Fitzdares Apprentice Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes (1m)
Selection: Venetian Gold (5/6, Boyle Sports/Betfred)
Short enough to put off some punters, but Venetian Gold has genuine form claims that hold up in this company. A 62,000gns breeze-up purchase by St Mark’s Basilica, she did plenty wrong on debut before running out a length winner at Kempton last month, doing it more professionally. Roger Varian has sent out two winners in the last 14 days and this filly simply has the best form on the board. Her RPR of 84 towers over Matilda Joslyngage (94 in Ireland, admittedly, but the flag about being taken out of races on yielding/soft ground is a real concern today), and Afraj’s Chelmsford maiden form is modest. Venetian Gold should give weight to the field and still win.
Matilda Joslyngage has the form credentials on paper but her connections have avoided soft going twice. That counts against her here.
6:27 โ Tommie Jakes Memorial Apprentice Fillies’ Handicap (6f)
Selection: Cameley Days Each-Way (4/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred)
Ten runners, a handicap, and a filly who has won three of her last six with form that genuinely fits this ground and distance. Cameley Days is a 6f winner on good to soft, which is precisely what she faces today. Chris Dwyer’s yard is cold (0/8 last 14 days) but the horse’s recent form supersedes that concern. The defeat at Lingfield 17 days ago was described as no backward step, and a 3lb rise looks manageable. Stall 8 gives her a decent gate position in a race where the high draw is no disadvantage over 6f at Goodwood.
Twirler is interesting: an Epsom winner on good to soft and a six-time winner who overcame trouble in running at Windsor last month. She’s 3lb lower than when winning there and is an each-way alternative. Midnight Call is a front-runner who thrives on synthetics (6-14 on all-weather) but the Spotlight notes she’s not been tested on ground this slow. That’s a risk not worth taking at 9/2. Cameley Days is the call, with each-way cover in a 10-runner handicap entirely justified.
7:02 โ Join Fitzdares For A Personal Betting Service Apprentice Handicap (7f)
Selection: Ice Cube (3/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred)
Richard Spencer has a live record recently (1/3 last 14 days) and Ice Cube makes solid appeal on the trip drop alone. Both his recent runs over 1m saw him show plenty of pace before weakening, and the Spotlight says explicitly that dropping back to 7f should be a big help. His RPR of 78 is competitive in this field and he clearly has ability, the question has always been whether the mile tests his stamina. It doesn’t today. At 3/1 in what is a wide-open affair, this is a workable price for a horse with a clear form angle.
Twilight Glow’s best form came on good to soft at Newbury over 6f and he’s worth a second look if a bigger price is your game, but Ice Cube has the more obvious key to unlocking improvement today.
7:37 โ Thelma Horne Memorial Apprentice Handicap (1m)
Selection: Cristo (3/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred)
Richard Hannon fires in 13/55 winners over the last 14 days and Cristo is the most solid form horse in this race. Both his wins have been at Chelmsford over 1m2f but he’s capable on turf, and the Salisbury run last time (1m, good, going close with Silca Bay behind him) is the key piece of evidence. He handles soft and drops back in trip slightly, which shouldn’t inconvenience a horse who stays further. His RPR of 89 leads the field on form, and Tyrese Cameron’s claim helps offset the weight. Asteverdi, trained by James Owen, has her three wins on ground slower than good and is a genuine threat at 11/4, but Cristo’s Salisbury effort was more recent and more convincing. Take the 3/1.
Jakarta is interesting if the fast-ground excuse from 13 days ago is genuine, and she clearly handles cut, but the 5/1 is not a standout price when Cristo is sitting right there at the same mark with better visible recent form.
8:12 โ Goodwood Horseracing Club Membership Apprentice Handicap (1m4f)
Selection: Sixpack Each-Way (11/4, Boyle Sports/Betfred)
James Owen has a course A/E of 1.09 at Goodwood (17% winners, 5/30), and Sixpack is exactly the type of horse his yard has been placing well. This six-year-old stays 1m6f, won over 1m4f at Doncaster last month in a genuine battle, and earned a 3lb rise that he can handle given his profile. Good to soft ground is fine. The Spotlight says plainly: he’ll be bang there on ground he can deal with. Mason Paetel doesn’t get his claim here, but Sixpack doesn’t need the advantage. He’s the class horse in the race who stays the trip better than most of his rivals.
Salamanca City is well-treated on her best form and D’Arcy’s claim eases a career-high mark, but the Spotlight raises a reasonable concern about whether 1m4f stretches her. Renesmee is consistent and handles the going, but Sixpack’s Doncaster win was recent, gritty and on a similar trip. He’s the one to be on.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 2/1 โ Boyle Sports (others: 2/1 Betfred, 2/1 LiveScore Bet)
Two wins on the bounce at Newbury and Yarmouth, a proven ability to handle soft ground, and Jack Dace in the saddle at a track where he wins 17% of his rides at an A/E of 1.71. The 6lb penalty is the only hesitation but in an apprentice handicap over a trip and on ground that suits, this is the most clear-cut selection on the card. Tilani is trained to peak fitness right now and Dace’s Goodwood record is the kind of stat you build your bets around.
